Orioles pick up rare comeback win against White Sox

Jul 3, 2007 - 5:24 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Chris Ray came through where Bobby Jenks couldn't as the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a rare victory.

Ray struck out the side in the ninth after the Orioles touched Jenks for two runs in the top of the frame as the Orioles posted a 7-6 victory over the the Chicago White Sox.

Baltimore scored three runs in the eighth and then completed the comeback against Jenks to win for the first time this season when trailing after eight innings.

"I forgot about all the bad outings, and I just went out there and pitched," Ray said. "It's a huge win, especially when you come from behind. This team has pumped itself up."

"This is the biggest comeback for this club this year," Orioles interim manager Dave Trembley said. "It's probably one of the better wins I've ever been involved in. It's great for our team."

Kevin Millar singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth off of Jenks (2-4). Corey Patterson, who went 4-for-4, led off the ninth with a double and scored on a single by Brian Roberts to tie the game, 6-6.

"(Jenks) is as tough as there is," Millar said. "He's got a great fastball, he's got a great hard cutter, and he's got a good curve ball. I wanted to have a good at-bat, and make him make a mistake."

"This is something that we can hopefully build on," Roberts said. "It'll give us confidence to come back late in the games. This win showed all of us that we still have something left in the tank."

The comeback by the Orioles ruined what could have been Mark Buehrle's last start for Chicago. Buehrle gave up nine hits, four runs - two earned - and struck out three.

"Buehrle's unbelievable," Millar said. "He mixes up all his pitches, throws strikes, and works fast."

Buehrle, a free agent at the end of the season, has been in contract talks with the White Sox as of late but has also been the subject of trade rumors as the White Sox plummet from playoff contention.

"It was a good game until the last couple of innings," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We blew it, we blew this game. I didn't even want to (talk to reporters), I was so embarrassed."

At one point during the Monday's game, fans chanted "Re-sign Buehrle." Buehrle, who pitched a no-hitter for the White Sox in April, has been said to want a full "no-trade" clause in any new contract.

"Everybody loves Buehrle," Guillen said. "I feel so excited when people are behind him the way they are."

Chicago's Juan Uribe hit his seventh home run of the year in the fifth inning, to break a 2-2 tie. He has now hit safely in his last eight games, going 11-for-29 during that span.

Jim Thome and Josh Fields each added two-run homers for the White Sox. Thome hit his in the first to stake Chicago to a 2-0 lead. Fields made it 6-2 in the sixth.

Rob Bell (1-1) pitched the eighth to pick up the win for Baltimore .

Orioles starter Erik Bedard gave up the three home runs over 5 2/3 innings.
