Marcum, Glaus lead Blue Jays over Angels

Aug 26, 2007 - 5:13 AM By Chris Padula PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays continued to give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim trouble.

Troy Glaus went 3-for-5 with a homer and Shaun Marcum tossed six effective innings as the Blue Jays posted a 9-2 victory over the Angels on Saturday.

Marcum (11-5) won for the sixth time in his last seven starts, helping the Blue Jays take the season series from the Angels for the fifth consecutive year.

"See, we can pitch just as good as the Angels," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Shaun was OK today but wasn't really sticking it to them."

Marcum tossed six innings, giving up two runs and eight hits in improving to 2-0 lifetime vs. the Angels. On August 15, the 25-year-old limited Anaheim to one run in seven frames of a 2-1 win at Rogers Centre.

"It was a grind and battle," Marcum said. "I felt like I was struggling with my location and command. I just wanted to settle down and go out and pound the strike zone, since I found myself rushing and leaving pitches up in the zone."

Brian Wolfe threw two scoreless innings and Scott Downs tossed a scoreless ninth to cap the victory.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the sixth inning, Aaron Hill and Gregg Zaun hit consecutive RBI doubles against Angels starter Joe Saunders (7-2). John McDonald's run-scoring single capped the three-run uprising as Toronto took the lead for good.

"It just seemed like they put together better at-bats against me the second time through the lineup," Saunders said. "I know they have a good-hitting lineup and they beat me."

The Blue Jays strung together four consecutive hits - including three of their seven doubles - in the frame.

In the ninth, former Angel Glaus concluded a four-run frame when he launched his 17th homer - a two-run blast - off reliever Darren Oliver to provide the final margin.

"Definitely is always good when any player can come back to a former team and play well," Glaus said. "They have had my number over the years, but it was just good to get some pitches that I could handle."

Zaun lofted a sacrifice fly and McDonald added an RBI single to help the Blue Jays erase a 2-0 deficit in the fourth.

"I felt the momentum change once we tied the game back up, and that's when all the guys started hitting up and down the lineup," Zaun said.

Saunders (7-2) was roughed up for a season-high five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

"It was one of those starts where I didn't have my best stuff," Saunders said. "I had good enough stuff to win and it just didn't work out that way for me."

Orlando Cabrera and Jeff Mathis each drove in a run for the Angels (75-54), who remained one game ahead of Seattle (73-54) atop the American League West Division.

"We know that Seattle is not going to go away for the rest of the year," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We just need to come out here (Sunday) and concentrate on winning the game and splitting the series."
