Royals race to early lead to defeat Tigers

Sep 23, 2007 - 3:49 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- The door may have just shut on the Detroit Tigers' postseason hopes.

Mike Sweeney, Emil Brown and Mark Grudzielanek all had two RBI as the Kansas City Royals coasted to a 7-4 victory over the Tigers on Saturday.

The setback pushed Detroit (84-71) 5 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees (89-65) in the American League wild card chase with just seven games remaining. New York defeated Toronto.

"Everybody else is going to be more dramatic about it than I am," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We're trying to win as many games as we can, trying to give the fans as good a show as we can. We don't like the situation we're in but that's the situation we played ourselves into.

"We're going to continue to play hard, we've got seven games left. We're going to give it everything we've got. That's what we're supposed to do. It's a little sad that we're probably not going to go to the postseason."

Detroit starter Kenny Rogers (3-3) yielded a two-run single to Brown during a three-run first frame.

An inning later, Grudzielanek delivered an RBI double before coming home on Sweeney's run-scoring single to left to extend the lead to 5-1.

"Kenny (Rogers) is a great pitcher," Sweeney said. "Our plan was to get to him early, if you don't he'll just shut you down in the late innings. We were able to score early and not go to sleep and add more runs later."

Grudzielanek had two hits off Rogers, improving to 11-of-17 against the veteran lefthander for his career.

"I just can't explain it," Grudzielanek said. "(Rogers) made some mistakes and I took advantage of them. I guess some guys have you and I'm that with him."

Rogers gave up five runs and eight hits through six innings to remain winless in four outings since coming off the disabled list on September 5.

"For me, you've got to continually make some quality pitches," Rogers said. "They got a couple runs in that first inning that came back to haunt us."

Kansas City starter Kyle Davies (3-6) snapped his personal three-game skid, allowing three runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 frames for the win.

"This was a step forward from my last start," Davies said. "I was able to use my curveball to keep the hitter off-balance. The key to was staying ahead of the hitters. It's always nice to get win, but you have to get better and better with every start."

The Tigers had a chance to rally in the sixth with runners on second and third, but reliever John Bale struck out Brandon Inge and forced Curtis Granderson to ground out to end the threat.

"Somehow you've got to find a way to manufacture runs," Granderson said. "Find a way to get the guys in that are on across the board because the runners left on base total ends up being a big point that a lot of people don't see. Sure enough, it ends up coming back to bite us again."

Granderson recorded his seventh leadoff homer in the first to set a club record and Magglio Ordonez finished with four hits as Detroit fell to 10-7 in the season series.
