Mets end offensive woes with four in 12th vs. Nationals
Apr 29, 2007 - 5:31 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The offensive breakout finally arrived for the New York Mets.Julio Franco tied the game with a two-out, pinch-hit single in the ninth and Carlos Beltran hit a two-out, two-run double that sparked a four-run 12th in a 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night.
After failing to get a hit with runners in scoring position in the last 17 2/3 innings, New York was able to exhale by exploding for runs runs with two outs to avoid their longest losing streak of the season.
With the Mets one out away from their third straight loss, Franco's single scored Endy Chavez just ahead of an excellent throw from Austin Kearns to tie the game at 2-2.
"I just did my job. I felt real good. I just put my team in a position to win the game," Franco said. "We took advantage of our chances out there."
The Mets were unable to take advantage of their chances in Friday's 4-3 loss in which they were just 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and it almost happened again. New York had just two hits until the ninth and had failed to take advantage of seven walks issued by Nationals' pitchers.
Damion Easley did not let it happen again, though, as he led off the 12th with a double and Saul Rivera (0-1) walked pinch hitter Ramon Castro to bring Jose Reyes to the plate. Reyes laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line and Rivera had no shot at catching the speedster.
Ryan Wagner came in and got Paul Lo Duca to hit into a force-out at home, but Beltran hit a two-run double just inside the first base line to plate Easley and Reyes.
After Carlos Delgado was intentionally walked, David Wright followed with his first RBI in eight games, hitting a two-run single to left for a 6-2 lead.
It marked the first blown save against the Mets in 12 tries for closer Chad Cordero, and the third in six chances this season. The righthander had allowed just one earned run in his last 25 2/3 innings vs. New York.
Cordero looked to be well on his way to another save against the Mets when Moises Alou negated a leadoff walk by Wright by hitting into a double play.
However, Shawn Green followed with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Chavez. Franco then slapped a single to right and Chavez executed a hook slid that just beat the tag of Jesus Flores.
"It's frustrating," Cordero said. "We had a chance to win tonight. I have to do a better job out there. We just have to bounce back tomorrow."
Aaron Sele (1-0) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings as the Mets got four scoreless innings from four relievers. Billy Wagner allowed a pair two-out singles before striking out Brian Schneider to end it.
Ronnie Belliard drove in both runs for the Nationals, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Still winless, Jerome Williams (0-4) had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings and retired nine in a row after a walk to Lo Duca in the third. Beltran pulled a breaking ball into center field to break up the no-hit bid.
"I felt real good out there tonight," said Williams, who left with an ankle injury in the seventh. "I have good command of my pitches. Unfortunately we didn't get the win tonight."
New York manager Willie Randolph was ejected in the sixth after arguing a call on a potential inning-ending double play. One batter later, Jose Lopez, who was the runner on the play, scored the first run of the game on a double by Belliard.
Mets starter Tom Glavine was outstanding again, allowing just one run and three hits in six innings. The future Hall of Famer has allowed three runs or less in each of his six starts and remains seven wins shy of 300 for his career.
New York second baseman Jose Valentin left the game in the fourth with a knee injury and was replaced by Easley.
