Wood, Treanor spark late offensive surge for Marlins

Jul 22, 2007 - 3:09 AM MIAMI (TICKER) -- Jason Wood, Matt Treanor and Hanley Ramirez all homered as the Florida Marlins used a late power surge to defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 11-1, on Saturday night.

In the seventh inning, Wood stroked his third homer of the season to snap a 1-1 tie and Treanor followed with his second blast of the campaign off Cincinnati rookie Scott Livingston.

"It would be nice for anybody to go back-to-back, but with (Treanor) it's special," added Wood, who was in Treanor's wedding party.

It was the third time this season Florida hit back-to-back blasts.

"I was leading off that inning and I told myself like I do all the time to try and see the ball and hit it hard," Wood said. "It was a changeup and I put a pretty good swing on it. I didn't even have time to celebrate that thing and he was hitting it on the blue tarp up there."

"My focus on the game is I threw two bad pitches," Livingston said. "That's unacceptable to me and it's unacceptable, period."

Ramirez delivered his 17th homer - a three-run shot - during a commanding eight-run eighth. Wood and Treanor both drove in runs in the uprising.

The Marlins' seven hits and eight runs in the eighth were season highs. This also marked only the second time in franchise history they batted around in an inning without recording an out. The first came on September 17, 1995 at Colorado.

"I can't come in with the bases loaded and let them score like that," Reds reliever Todd Coffey said.

The trio finished with nine hits and nine RBI combined.

With the Marlins trailing, 1-0, in the fifth, Wood laced a leadoff single and later scored on Ramirez's tying single off Livingston (2-1).

Starter Byung-Hyun Kim (5-5) yielded one run and five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings en route to his first home win as a Marlin. Kim was acquired from Colorado in May.

"Playing well is contagious and it all starts with the guy on the mound," Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "(Kim) did a nice job for us."

In his first career start vs. Cincinnati, the 28-year-old South Korean entered with 0-0 showing and a lowly 1.46 ERA through 12 relief appearances.

"(Kim) was throwing his off-speed (pitch) for a strike early in the count and he was able to kind of back it up with his fastball down in the zone," Treanor said.

Livingston tossed six-plus innings, allowing three runs and eight hits with five strikeouts. The lefthander was making his second start since being recalled from the minors last week.

"(Livingston) did a real nice job for us," Cincinnati manager Pete Mackanin said. "Once again, the bullpen gave it up."

Edwin Encarnacion opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth for the Reds, who are looking for their first winning trip since going 4-3 from June 19-26 of last season.

Florida All-Star Miguel Cabrera extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the first
