Kim strikes out career-high 10 as Marlins edge Rockies
Aug 2, 2007 - 3:41 AM MIAMI (Ticker) -- Byung-Hyun Kim showed the Colorado Rockies what they are missing.Kim recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and All-Star Miguel Cabrera homered as the Florida Marlins held on for a 4-3 victory over the Rockies on Wednesday night.
Kim (6-5) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 frames to record his second straight home win. The South Korean righthander had struck out nine three times last season with Colorado, which traded him away on May 14 for Jorge Julio.
"Ten strikeouts for the first time, wow," said Kim, who started 50 games in 2 1/2 seasons with the Rockies.
Despite the win, Kim walked six batters for the second straight game. He has now issued an eye-popping 21 walks over his last 23 1/3 innings.
The 28-year-old also threw 126 pitches, the most by a Marlin since Josh Beckett fired 126 on May 20, 2004 against the Houston Astros.
"I wanted to throw more," Kim said. "But it was hard to throw strikes (Wednesday)."
Three Florida relievers bridged the gap to closer Kevin Gregg, who got the final three outs for his 22nd save of the season.
The game was tied at 2-2 in the fourth inning before the Marlins took the lead for good. Josh Willingham singled, stole second and advanced on a grounder before coming home on Matt Treanor's single off Colorado starter Josh Fogg (5-7).
"I want to participate in the game too," said Treanor, who is hitting .408 since June 5. "I need to get that feeling out of me that I am in the lineup just to be in the lineup - and that I am in the lineup to produce."
An inning later, Cabrera doubled Florida's advantage with his 26th blast over the right field wall. The 24-year-old has found his power stroke of late, homering in three of his last four games.
Cabrera's 417-foot shot was the 130th of his career, moving him into sole possession of second place on the club's all-time list.
"(Cabrera) can play," Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He can hit. What else is there to say? Is there anything left to say about him?"
Willingham hit an RBI single to center and Cabrera scored on center fielder Willy Taveras' fielding error as Florida forged a 2-2 tie in the first. The duo combined for six hits.
Fogg gave up four runs and eight hits with two walks in five innings en route to his first loss in four starts.
"I didn't throw many strikes there in the first inning and cost myself a few runs," Fogg said. "I felt like it got a little better but I still made some bad pitches that ended up costing us the game, so it wasn't a very efficient performance by me."
Colorado built an early lead on RBI doubles from Kaz Matsui and Todd Helton in the first. "We keep battling but the bottom line is we left 14 men on base and we lose a game by one run," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said.
