Rheinecker shuts down Mariners in first game of doubleheader

Jul 25, 2007 - 1:20 AM ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- Rheinecker is worth 19 points in scrabble. However, the Seattle Mariners managed just one off the Texas Rangers lefthander on Tuesday.

John Rheinecker threw seven solid innings and Marlon Byrd had a pair of hits and an RBI as the Rangers defeated the Mariners, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader.

The 28-year-old Rheinecker (1-0) limited the Mariners to one unearned run and five hits with four strikeouts in just his second start of the season.

It was in stark contrast to his only other start against Detroit on June 5 when he allowed four runs and seven hits in three innings.

"I definitely took care of the energy problem I had in my first outing," said Rheinecker.

"I was too amped when I went out there and was trying to throw through the catcher's chest protector. Today, I was taking some off my fastball and I think that's what I've got to do up here when situations get into crunch time. It's not about throwing harder, it's about easing off."

With the Rangers demoting Robinson Tejeda to Class AAA Oklahoma on Monday, Texas has an opening for a fifth starter in their rotation and Rheinecker served notice that he deserves consideration.

"He's not officially No. 5 but we've got a second game and he's still on the roster. We're not making a move right now, so we'll see how it goes," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. After Seattle took an early lead in the first on a RBI groundout by Adrian Beltre, Texas answered with runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 2-1 lead and Rheinecker made it stand up.

With two outs in the fourth, Sammy Sosa doubled to left field off Mariners starter Ryan Feierabend (1-4) and scored as Byrd tripled to left-center for his 34th RBI since joining the Rangers on May 26.

Meanwhile, Feierabend allowed base runners in four of his five innings. The 21-year-old lefthander allowed two runs and six hits.

Texas took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Michael Young singled home Travis Metcalf, who had doubled to left field to start the inning. Young is now hitting .464 (13-28) with five RBI in his last six games.

"A couple of pitches were not the greatest tonight," said Feierabend. "The triple to Byrd was a change that was supposed to be away but it cut inside."

Despite the solid effort, Feierabend was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma after the game.

"I thought Feierabend did a really nice job out there," said Seattle manager John McLaren. "The margin has kind of been razor thin out there and the pitchers don't have a lot of room for error because we're not scoring runs. Ryan represented himself well out there tonight."

Joaquin Benoit allowed the tying run to reach with two outs in the eighth, when he walked Beltre and threw a wild pitch, but he struck out Richie Sexson to get out of trouble.

Eric Gagne, who nearly squandered a four-run lead on Monday, worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to record his 15th save in 16 chances as the Rangers handed the Mariners their fourth straight loss.
