Inglett caps Jays rally with two-run single

Jul 26, 2008 - 4:41 AM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Joe Inglett lined a two-run single off the glove of right fielder Ichiro Suzuki in the 10th inning, helping the Toronto Blue Jays rally for a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

Matt Stairs homered and fell a triple shy of the cycle for Toronto, which has won four straight.

Gregg Zaun led off the 10th with a single to center off Mark Lowe (1-4), who then made a throwing error to allow John McDonald to reach.

After a failed sacrifice attempt by Scott Rolen, Brad Wilkerson walked to load the bases. Inglett then lined Lowe's first offering into right field, where it caromed off Suzuki's glove, allowing two runs to score.

"I was just begging for it to go up a little more, just so it would go above Ichiro's head," Inglett said. "It so happened it just got off his glove."

"I though he might catch it," Lowe said. "First-pitch changeup. I was making sure of strike one. It was a good pitch. It looked like he was sitting on it. (I) thought for sure it was an out. The way Ichiro was going back on it, he was going to have it."

Seattle interim manager Jim Riggleman did not fault his star.

"It's a tough play," Riggleman said. "If it's a fly bal,l you're on it, but when it's a line drive with top spin on it, it's a tough play. He gave it everything he had. He just didn't catch it."

Seattle was in prime position to snap its five-game skid as Jeremy Reed hit a go-ahead RBI single to center off Jesse Carlson (3-1) in the top of the ninth.

"Not the way you draw it up to get a win, giving up the go-ahead run to them, but a huge comeback for the team," Carlson said.

After a night of missed opportunities, the Blue Jays finally caught a break. Prior to Inglett's key hit, Toronto had stranded 12 runners, including nine after the sixth inning. One of the rare key hits came from Stairs, who tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single to right-center off J.J. Putz in the eighth.

Kenji Johjima's RBI double in the second put the Mariners up, 1-0, but Stairs responded in the bottom half with a solo blast to right field off Toronto starter John Parrish.

Seattle took a 3-1 lead in the third as Adrian Beltre snapped a tie with an RBI double and Jose Lopez added a run-scoring single.

But Inglett's third-inning RBI groundout cut Toronto's deficit to 3-2.

However, the Blue Jays missed out on a great chance to tie the game in the fifth, when they loaded the bases only to see Marco Scutaro line into an inning-ending double play. Toronto proceeded to leave four runners on over the next two frames.

Parrish allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings.

The Blue Jays were held in check early by former teammate Miguel Batista. The righthander, who entered with a 1.50 ERA in eight games against Toronto, allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 frames.
