Ojeda's career day helps Webb enter record book
May 4, 2008 - 12:55 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Brandon Webb did not have to be at his best to enter the franchise record book thanks to Augie Ojeda.Webb battled through six innings and Ojeda drove in a career-high six runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 10-4 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday.
Chris Snyder, Stephen Drew and Justin Upton each added an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who notched just their second win over the Mets in their last 16 meetings here.
Ojeda, who started at second base in place of the injured Orlando Hudson, fell one shy of the franchise single-game record of seven RBI set in 2006 by current New York utilityman Damion Easley.
"Augie has been great," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "Certain players compliment a team or other players very well, and Augie is a great compliment - not only on the field, but in the clubhouse. His preparation is flawless every day. He comes to the park not playing every day but preparing to play every day, and that allows him to be ready for a game like this and to be productive."
Ojeda's huge performance helped Webb (7-0) become the major leagues' first seven-game winner. The righthander matched the franchise record of seven straight wins set by Randy Johnson in 2000.
Webb was not as sharp as usual, however. The National League Pitcher of the Month for April, he allowed four runs and five hits, walking two and striking out three.
Carlos Delgado's three-run homer off Webb in the sixth cut the Mets' deficit to 5-4, but two relievers held them at bay until the Diamondbacks tacked on five runs in the eighth off Duaner Sanchez.
"I didn't have my best stuff, my velocity was down," Webb said. "I didn't have a lot of snap on (my curveball) and wasn't locating like I wanted to. I used my curveball more to offset my sinker and was able to battle through it. I didn't feel great and did make one mistake to Delgado, but we were able to overcome that."
Sanchez allowed four straight hits and threw a wild pitch that plated a run to start the frame. Upton made it 6-4 with an RBI single and, one batter later, Ojeda laced a two-run double off Scott Schoeneweis for a 9-4 bulge.
Snyder capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
"We fought back and we have been playing well here, so I thought we would come back and win the game," Mets manager Willie Randolph said. "After that home run by Delgado, I thought we had a shot there. But the bullpen didn't hold them and they opened up the floodgates."
The Mets took an early 1-0 lead in the third as Raul Casanova singled home a run. Arizona responded in the second as Ojeda hit a two-run single to center field off Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (2-2).
Drew made it 3-1 with an RBI single in the fourth and Ojeda continued his career day in the fifth by roping a two-run double for a four-run advantage.
However, New York battled back in the sixth to draw within one.
Ryan Church hit a one-out single and Carlos Beltran drew a two-out walk. Delgado then drove a 1-1 fastball into the right field seats for the first home run surrendered by Webb in the last 40 innings.
Pelfrey allowed five runs and nine hits in five innings. The 24-year-old righthander struck out one and walked four.
"Today was a lack of execution," Pelfrey said. "I walked too many guys and let balls out on the middle of the plate, and they made me pay. I know I can be better than I have been because these last three performances are not cutting it."
