Webb, Diamondbacks too strong for Marlins
Jun 29, 2008 - 2:46 AM By Christopher Stock PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterMIAMI (Ticker) -- Brandon Webb pitched six solid innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks posted a 6-2 victory over the Florida Marlins on Saturday.
Chris Young drove in three runs and Mark Reynolds knocked in a pair for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
"We had a talk with the manager on Friday night and we understand that we have to change some things around," Young said. "We have to get it done when we have the opportunity to do so, which we have not done lately."
Webb (12-4) gave up two runs and five hits while walking three. He struck out eight, while throwing 67 of his 110 pitches for strikes. The 29-year old righthander lowered his ERA to 3.21.
"It was good to get a win under my belt, it has been awhile," Webb said. "It was a struggle once again. I had to battle each inning, it was a tough game with a runner on every inning."
In a pivotal sixth inning with the score tied 1-1, Andrew Miller (5-7) walked consecutive hitters and Conor Jackson loaded the bases on an error by Mike Jacobs. Reynolds drove in two with a double down the right-field line.
Young continued the scoring as he drove in two with a triple to deep left-center field and Augie Ojeda doubled him home to give the Diamondbacks a 6-1 lead.
"We had some big hits," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. "A lot of the time, big hits end up taking the pressure off."
Miller gave up six runs - three earned - and five hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out four and walking three.
"In general, I feel pretty in command of throwing the pitches that I want, but I'm just not getting the results and it's tough," Miller said.
Cody Ross and Jorge Cantu both had sacrifice flies for the Marlins, who have lost five of their last six games.
Florida second baseman Dan Uggla left the game in the fifth with a left ankle sprain. Uggla singled in the bottom of the fourth, rounded first base before coming up limp. X-rays were negative.
"He's going to be day-to-day," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He sprained it pretty good and I don't expect him to play on Sunday."
