Cameron drives in winning run, Brewers edge Diamondbacks
Jul 3, 2008 - 6:46 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Mike Cameron came through with an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.Cameron singled to left-center field in the ninth, scoring Russell Branyan, who reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Gabe Kapler.
"Tonight we were able to execute. We strung some hits together did the fundamentals and got some big hits," Cameron said. "I really wasn't thinking about too much. (Lyon) has a fastball, curveball and change. I got the curveball, put a pretty good swing on it and as it turns out it was a big hit.
Rickie Weeks put the Brewers ahead, 3-2, in the eighth with his first career pinch home run. But Justin Upton answered in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot, forging a 3-3 tie.
David Riske (1-1) picked up the win despite allowing Upton's homer. Salomon Torres yielded a hit and a walk in the ninth but notched his 15th save of the season.
"That was a wild game man. There was nothing early and then big hit after big hit on both sides," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "There were nice defensive plays, daring base running, it was a great game."
Brandon Lyon (2-3) took the loss for Arizona, which is under .500 (42-43) for the first time since April 3.
Arizona, which has lost eight of its last 11 games, built an early 2-0 lead but was unable to hold on.
Miguel Montero got the Diamondbacks on the board with an RBI single to center field in the second inning. Arizona doubled the advantage in the third on a two-out single by Chris Young that plated Orlando Hudson, who had doubled earlier in the frame.
Milwaukee rallied and eventually took the lead by scoring single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Jason Kendall scored on a single to left by J.J. Hardy in the sixth to halve the deficit. Kapler tripled to the wall in right-center in the seventh and scored on a double to left by Cameron to knot the game before Weeks belted his eighth homer of the season a frame later.
"He is very, very clutch. He is starting to get hot. We haven't seen Cameron hot," Yost said. "Those were as big hits as you can get to give us a chance to win that ballgame. When we were doing absolutely nothing he tied it up and then came back and put us ahead. Two clutch hits."
