Offense keeping Pirates out of last place
Jul 8, 2008 - 1:54 PM Houston (41-49) at Pittsburgh (41-47) 7:05 p.m. EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates offense has helped them avoid the basement in the National League Central Division.
The Pirates go for their second straight win on Tuesday when they continue a three-game series against the Houston Astros.
Pittsburgh, which ranks fourth in the NL with 430 runs this season, pounded out 10 runs and 14 hits en route to a three-run victory over the Astros during the series opener on Monday. The win helped the Pirates (41-47) snap a three-game losing streak and move out of last place in the division.
However, Pittsburgh owns a 5.17 ERA - the worst in the majors - and are desperately hoping Ian Snell (3-7, 5.99 ERA) can provide a boost when he returns from the disabled list on Tuesday.
Snell was placed on the DL June 22 with a strained right elbow after winning just one of his previous 13 outings. The 26-year-old righthander has the benefit of returning at home where he owns a 3.57 ERA this season compared to a 8.14 mark on the road.
Brandon Backe (5-9, 5.22), who has allowed 11 runs in his last 12 innings and has just one victory in his previous seven starts, counters for the Astros
