Giles, Padres flatten Phillies
Aug 17, 2008 - 7:09 AM By Tim Powers PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Chad Reineke won his major league debut as the San Diego Padres used a five-run fourth inning to take down the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-3, on Saturday.
Brian Giles had four RBI, including a three-run double, and Jody Gerut added three hits and drove in two runs in support of Reineke, who was called up from Class AAA Portland earlier in the day to make the start.
Reineke (1-0) allowed three runs and five hits in five innings while filling in for the injured Chris Young, who went on the disabled list on Thursday with a strained right forearm. The 26-year-old righthander struck out five and walked three.
"It was kind of strange against the first hitter, and you do have some anxiety and nerves," Reineke said. "My fastball was not very good tonight, and I had to rely a lot on my slider. I feel good about the win, but I would've liked to throw fewer pitches and go more than five innings. But I'll take it."
Mike Adams, Clay Hensley, Heath Bell and Brian Falkenborg each contributed a scoreless inning of relief to secure San Diego's second win in three games.
"(Reineke) was a little bit erratic but found his way," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I know that in these types of games, your first one, you're pitching on a lot of emotion and adrenaline, and it saps you. But he hung in there. It was good to see."
Chase Headley walked to lead off the fourth against Kyle Kendrick and came around to score on Reineke's single before Giles delivered a three-run double.
Kevin Kouzmanoff added a run-scoring single in the frame as the Padres pushed across five runs - all with two outs - to erase a two-run deficit and take a 6-3 lead.
(Reineke) kept us in the ballgame," Giles said. "It was good to get a big hit there and get him a nice cushion. It was a big night for him and obviously a good win for us."
Gerut's two-run double off Les Walrond in the eighth pushed the bulge to 8-3.
Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino each drove in a run in the first to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead before Reineke settled down.
San Diego halved the deficit in the third on Giles' sacrifice fly, but Greg Dobbs belted a run-scoring double in the next frame to give the Phillies a 3-1 advantage.
"We scored three runs early, but we couldn't polish (Reineke) off," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We didn't really hit a ball hard after the third inning. We let a lot of fastballs go by."
Kendrick (10-7) lasted 3 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs and six hits. He struck out two and issued five walks.
"(Kendrick) has trouble with lefthanded hitters," Manuel said. "He walks guys and gets behind on them. He kind of slows down and looks like he can't get into the flow of the game."
Victorino had two hits for the Phillies, who have dropped five of six.
