Hart, McClung fuel Brewers past Orioles
Jun 22, 2008 - 3:52 AM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Corey Hart belted a two-run home run in the third inning to pace the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.Seth McClung (5-3) allowed two runs and three hits while striking out six to pick up the win for Milwaukee, which has won five of its last six games.
McClung, who retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, improved to 3-1 in the month of June.
After Brian Shouse struck out a pair in 1 1/3 innings, Salomon Torres closed the door by working the ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season.
Oscar Salazar belted a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the seventh inning for Baltimore, which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.
"When you come off the bench, you have to take the best pitch and be patient," Salazar said. "I tried to drive it. He gave me two sliders and then made the mistake with the curve ball."
"Obviously it wakes you up and gets you back into the game," Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said. "It's the little things that make the difference in a game."
That was the lone mistake made by McClung.
"McClung was rushing out constantly to the mound," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "I always think a pitcher should sit down just for a few seconds and get their heart beat down. Outside of that one curve ball to Salazar, he had 6 2/3 solid innings."
After Prince Fielder opened the scoring with a run-scoring groundout in the first inning, Hart deposited a pitch from Daniel Cabrera (5-3) over the left-field wall to give Milwaukee a 3-0 advantage.
"It was an inside fastball and I was trying to catch up to it - and luckily I did and knocked it out of the park," Hart said matter-of-factly.
Cabrera allowed three runs and seven hits and struck out eight in six innings to take the loss.
Gabe Kapler, who went 2-for-3, was the lone player in the contest to record multiple hits.
