Reds' Thompson eyeing first win in majors

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- After a successful major league debut, Cincinnati Reds rookie Daryl Thompson goes for his first win when he takes the mound against the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a three-game interleague series on Friday.

Thompson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out two on Saturday. The 22-year-old righthander did not factor in the decision, however, as the Reds posted a 6-0 victory over the New York Yankees.

The Reds hope for a similar effort from Thompson on Friday after the pitching staff was pounded for 26 runs during a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays - one of the majors worst offesnive clubs.

Cincinnati also will try to get things straightened out on the road, where they have lost has 27 times this season - second most in the majors.

C.C. Sabathia (5-8, 4.06) looks to continue that trend when he toes the rubber for the Indians. Sabathia, the 2007 Cy Young Award winner, is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA during his last three starts and is beginning to draw interest from several teams with the trade deadline a little more than a month away.
