Pedroia, Ortiz power Buchholz to win over Orioles

Sep 9, 2009 - 3:04 AM By JIMMY GOLEN AP Sports Writer

BOSTON(AP) -- Dustin Pedroia was yapping so much after his first regular-season two-homer game that he might have forgotten he's still way behind David Ortiz.

Pedroia had two of Boston's season-high six home runs on Tuesday night, and Ortiz hit his record-tying 269th homer as a designated hitter to lead the Red Sox to a 10-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

"He's got 35 more two-home run games to catch me," said Ortiz, who actually has 34 in his career.

But that didn't stop Pedroia, the 2008 AL MVP who homered twice against Tampa Bay in the playoffs last year, from talking in the dugout.

"There's no room to say anything," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "He does all the talking. You just sit there and laugh."

Clay Buchholz (5-3) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, retiring the first 10 Orioles in order. By the time Felix Pie walked with one out in the fourth, Buchholz had been staked to an 8-0 lead with five homers on Boston's first five hits.

"He probably looked like a combination of Don Drysdale, Warren Spahn and Sandy Koufax when he got an 8-0 lead," said Orioles manager Dave Trembley, whose team clinched a 12th consecutive losing season. "He kept pitching."

But that was an improvement over the last time he faced the Orioles.

On Aug. 2, Buchholz had a seven-run lead before giving up six runs in the third inning. He also gave up seven runs in 4 2-3 innings in Boston's 12-8 victory over the White Sox on Aug. 23.

"I try to keep that out of my mind as much as possible," he said. "The last start I had against these guys, we scored a few runs in the first and second and then I went out there and let the game blow up and let them back in the game. I try to stay as if the game was still tied. ... I think that kept my pitches a little bit more crisp."

Ortiz homered in the seventh inning to tie Frank Thomas for the most all-time by a DH. Kevin Youkilis, J.D. Drew and Alex Gonzalez also homered for the Red Sox, whose first five hits were homers as they improved to 12-2 against Baltimore this year. Buchholz struck out five and walked one to improve to 4-0 over his last five starts. Michael Bowden got the last six outs to finish off the combined five-hitter.

David Hernandez (4-7) lasted 2 2-3 innings, allowing six runs on four homers while walking two and striking out three. He is 0-3 in his last five starts.

"All four of those homers were supposed to be fastballs away, but they were in the middle," he said. "Right now I'm a thrower out there. I'm not a pitcher. The worst part is when you make mistakes they're all going to get hit hard."

Jacoby Ellsbury drew a leadoff walk, then Pedroia made it 2-0 with a homer off the top of a billboard above the Green Monster. Gonzalez made it 3-0 in the second when he hit his over the same sign. Pedroia led off the third with another homer, this one into the Monster Seats.

After Ortiz walked to chase Hernandez, callup Chris Lambert walked Jason Bay and gave up a three-run shot to Drew.

Ortiz's homer in the seventh made it 10-0.

NOTES: Drew reached 20 homers for the fourth time in his career, the first since he was with the Dodgers in 2006. ... Ortiz, who homered off right-hander Bob McCrory, has 312 total. ... Baltimore is 4-21 on the road against the AL East. ... The Orioles placed OF Adam Jones on the 15-day DL with a sprained left ankle, retroactive to Sept. 2. Baltimore recalled McCrory, Lambert and LHP Chris Waters from Triple-A Norfolk, and selected the contracts of INF Justin Turner and C Guillermo Rodriguez. ... The Red Sox activated SS Jed Lowrie from the 15-day DL and recalled C Dusty Brown from Triple-A Pawtucket. Boston signed SS Jose Iglesias to a four-year contract, beginning in 2010.
