Phillies rally on Ibanez's walk-off homer
Apr 20, 2009 - 1:59 AM PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Raul Ibanez relished the celebration following his first game-ending homer with the Philadelphia Phillies. He even enjoyed his shaving cream pie.Ibanez hit a two-run shot in the ninth inning to give the Phillies a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
"They got me good," said Ibanez, who still had traces of the postgame celebration in his left ear. "They got me real good and I was not ready for it. After a game like that I don't care what they put in it. They can spit in it and I'll take it."
Chase Utley hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Jimmy Rollins' first career pinch-hit drive in the eighth cut San Diego's lead to 4-3.
Ryan Howard started Philadelphia's winning rally with a leadoff single against Edwin Moreno, and Ibanez followed by hitting a 2-0 pitch into the right-field stands.
"It was a changeup," said Ibanez, who signed a free-agent deal with the Phillies in the offseason. "I thought it was out off the bat but I was worried it wouldn't stay straight and fair. I'm just glad it did."
Padres manager Bud Black had to use Moreno (0-1) in the ninth because closer Heath Bell had worked three consecutive days. Moreno had not allowed an earned run in his first six appearances this season.
"A couple of late homers in the game hurt us," Black said.
Ibanez, who has four career game-ending homers, went 2-for-4. Clay Condrey (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the win as Philadelphia ended a three-game skid.
"I got behind in the count and he got a good pitch to hit," Moreno said. "He's a good hitter and it happens."
San Diego scored three times in the third inning against Chan Ho Park. Jody Gerut singled in Everth Cabrera to give the Padres a 1-0 lead, and Edgar Gonzalez followed with a sinking liner to left that Ibanez struggled with before it glanced off his glove for a triple. Brian Giles added a run-scoring groundout.
Josh Geer, recalled from Triple-A Portland before the game, allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits in seven innings for San Diego.
Notes: The Padres placed RHP Walter Silva on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a strained right forearm. ... SS Rollins and OF Jayson Werth were held out the starting lineup for the first time this season. Rollins opened the season just 6-for-45 over 10 games. Werth entered in a 3-for-17 slump over the last four games. ... Cabrera left in the sixth with a hand injury. He will be evaluated again on Monday.
