Diamondbacks rally for 11-7 win over Rockies
Jul 5, 2009 - 5:27 AM By PAT GRAHAM AP Sports WriterDENVER(AP) -- Mark Reynolds' rant the night before wasn't intended to infuriate his teammates, just motivate them.
Did it ever.
Pinch-hitter Chris Young hit a tiebreaking, three-run double in the eighth inning and Stephen Drew finished a single shy of the cycle, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks rally for an 11-7 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.
Reynolds was hoping to see just this type of performance after ripping his team for their recent lackluster play.
"What I said (Friday) wasn't to call anybody out or (expletive) anybody off," Reynolds said. "We came out and responded. That's huge. If we can't build off this one, I don't know what it will take for us."
The Arizona third baseman followed up his words with actions, hitting a solo homer in the fourth. He's now third in the NL in homers with 23.
But the night belonged to Drew and two players whose names weren't even in the starting lineup as Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch switched things up in an attempt generate more offense.
Felipe Lopez and Young both came off the bench to provide key at bats. Young's was obvious, his double gave the Diamondbacks back the lead.
Lopez's performance got overshadowed a bit. He worked his way on base with a walk just before Young's hit. Lopez also had a two-run single in the ninth to give Arizona more breathing room.
"Man, this win means a lot the way things are going around here," Lopez said. "Everybody's happy, playing music - the way it's supposed to be. It's about having fun."
It took a late rally to make sure the fun returned to the clubhouse.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the eighth, Arizona scored six times to open up a big lead - and then had to hang on.
The Diamondbacks tied it at 4 when Gerardo Parra laced a one-out double into the left-center gap that scored Miguel Montero.
After Chad Tracy and Lopez walked, Young cleared the bases with a deep double off reliever Joel Peralta (0-2).
Drew then followed with a two-run homer, his third hit of the night to go along with a walk and a flyout.
The Rockies rallied in their half of the eighth, scoring three times.
But with two on, Chad Qualls was brought in and got Clint Barmes to line out to Drew. Qualls then pitched the ninth for the first four-out save of his career.
Scott Schoeneweis (1-0) earned the win simply by striking out Todd Helton with a runner on second in the seventh.
Aaron Cook gave up nine hits and three runs - two earned - in five innings. The righty pitched into the sixth before leaving when he had the wind knocked out him diving for Parra's grounder.
"Just like when you're a kid and you get the wind knocked out of you, I just couldn't catch my breath after that," Cook said. "I tried to throw a couple of pitches. I just told (Rockies manager Jim) Tracy I couldn't do it."
Cook was still in line for the win until the bullpen imploded.
Rusty from not much work lately?
Tracy's hoping so.
"If it happens once in a while, you're OK," he said. "If it's on a regular basis, that's a different story. But that hasn't been the case."
Barmes had a solo homer and an RBI double for the Rockies, who had their six-game home winning streak snapped. Ian Stewart added a two-run double, and Seth Smith had a two-run single.
Still, it wasn't enough to overtake a team motivated by a player's rant.
Just as Reynolds envisioned?
Maybe not, but he'll take it.
"Definitely I was proud," Reynolds said. "After tonight, hopefully guys get their confidence going and we keep it up."
NOTES: For the second straight night, the game was sent into a rain delay by an afternoon thunderstorm. The contest was delayed 27 minutes. ... Parra's hit in the ninth was originally ruled an error, but changed to a double. He finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored. ... Drew came up in the ninth needing a single for the cycle, but grounded out to second base. ... Young is now 2-for-9 as a pinch hitter this season.
