Diamondbacks rally back for 4-3 win over Rockies

Jul 5, 2009 - 11:20 PM By PAT GRAHAM AP Sports Writer

DENVER(AP) -- Mark Reynolds' All-Star fate is at the fingertips of the fans.

Left off the squad, the Diamondbacks third baseman is hoping the masses click his name so he can secure the final spot through Internet voting.

Reynolds did some good campaign work Sunday, hitting a three-run homer to help Arizona to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Is that enough to earn him some votes?

Dan Haren certainly hopes so. He was stumping for his teammate in the clubhouse soon after winning for the fourth time in five starts.

"He's been a huge part of the team this year," said Haren, who was named to his third straight All-Star team. "I really hope he gets in."

Reynolds ignited the Diamondbacks on Sunday by breaking up Ubaldo Jimenez's no-hit bid with his towering shot to left in the sixth inning.

In reality, he lit a spark two days before when he ranted on about his team's lackluster play. Since Reynolds' outburst, the Diamondbacks have won two straight, both in comeback fashion. The team captured a series for the first time since mid June at Kansas City.

"Sometimes that's all it takes, just a little kick in the butt to get guys going," Reynolds said. "This is what I was talking about the other day - don't give up, you never know what's going to happen."

Haren (8-5) allowed three runs - one earned - before being taken out in the seventh for a pinch hitter. The three runs allowed were his most since May 23 at Oakland.

The right hander scattered seven hits and struck out six on a day when he wasn't at his best.

"We were able to pick him up," Felipe Lopez said. "He's been picking us up all year, so it's nice for a change."

The Rockies felt fortunate to scratch out three runs off him.

"Feels like a huge accomplishment," Ian Stewart said. "He pounds the strike zone with four different pitches and always keeps you off balance. He's always tough."

Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo homer while Ryan Spilborghs and Todd Helton added RBI singles for Colorado, who lost two straight at Coors Field for the first time since Jim Tracy replaced Clint Hurdle as manager in late May.

Jimenez (6-8) had been dynamite against the Diamondbacks of late, throwing 19 scoreless innings dating back to last season.

But Reynolds wrecked that string. Jimenez got two quick outs before walking Alex Romero and Stephen Drew, setting the stage for Reynolds' 24th homer of the season.

Jimenez simply threw him one fastball too many.

"I had zero success against Jimenez in the past," Reynolds said. "The pitch right before (the homer) he blew a fastball right by me. I'm sure he probably thought he could do it again. I'm not going to lie, I was cheatin' (waiting for a fastball)."

After that, the wheels fell off for Jimenez, who was pulled following Lopez's go-ahead single in the seventh.

"The only thing I can do is learn from this game and forget it," said Jimenez, who allowed four runs and four hits in 6 1-3 innings. "I don't want to keep it with me my next game."

Yorvit Torrealba made his return to the lineup Sunday after missing time to attend to matters involving the kidnapping and safe recovery of his son, 11-year-old Yorvit Eduardo, and other family members in Venezuela.

The catcher left the team on June 2 to join his wife in Venezuela. A day later, they were left along a highway outside Caracas.

His wife and son are now safely with him in Denver.

Torrealba received a round of applause from the Coors Field fans before his first at bat. He went 1-for-4 with a double.

The Rockies will be represented at the All-Star game by outfielder Brad Hawpe and pitcher Jason Marquis. Both players are making their first appearance.

As for Reynolds, he remains hopeful as he competes with four other NL players for the last All-Star spot.

It's now up to the fans.

"If they want to put me in there, that's fine. If not, I'll have a little vacation," Reynolds said.

NOTES: Arizona RHP Tom Gordon (left hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday. ... Rockies RHP Aaron Cook jarred his neck Saturday diving for a grounder, but the team doesn't anticipate him missing any time.
