D'backs beat Dodgers 5-3 in 10 innings

Sep 1, 2009 - 6:15 AM By BETH HARRIS AP Sports Writer

LOS ANGELES(AP) -- Ned Colletti didn't see much of the game.

The Dodgers' general manager was too busy wheeling and dealing to set his lineup for postseason play, making moves that overshadowed Los Angeles' 5-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 10 innings Monday night.

The Dodgers acquired first baseman Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Jon Garland from Arizona in separate trades announced late in the game.

Los Angeles received cash considerations and gave up minor league infielder Justin Fuller for Thome, who has 23 homers and 74 RBIs this season.

The Dodgers will get a player to be named for Garland, who is 8-11 with a 4.28 ERA. Thome and Garland were signed before the midnight EDT deadline, making them eligible for postseason play, something they weren't likely to see with their previous clubs.

Thome went from a third-place team trailing Detroit and Minnesota in the AL Central Division to the NL West-leading Dodgers. Garland made out even better, leaving the D'backs, who trail the Dodgers by 18 games in the NL West.

"You're always trying to improve the club," Colletti said. "I've been trying to get a starting pitcher for a while. We were able to land George Sherrill at the July 31 deadline, but I thought we need another starting pitcher, which is what Jon Garland gives us."

After the game, Garland made what he called a "definitely weird" walk from the visitors' clubhouse to the Dodgers' room. He was scheduled to pitch the series finale against the Dodgers on Thursday.

"It's definitely a team I've always wanted to pitch for," said Garland, who was born in the northern suburb of Valencia and went to high school in nearby Granada Hills. "This is where the dream started for me."

D'backs pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said Garland thanked him for their short time together before departing.

"Jon was a pro," he said. "He went about his business in a first-class manner."

Dodgers manager Joe Torre said he planned to talk to Garland about starting on Thursday in place of knuckleballer Charlie Haeger.

"Jon Garland is going to get the ball every five days and if we have six starters, so be it," Torre said. "It has made us stronger. We have some threat off the bench now, and with Garland, we have someone who knows how to pitch."

The trades gave the Dodgers reason to be happy, something the game didn't do.

Rusty Ryal homered to lead off the 10th, putting Arizona on track for its fifth consecutive victory.

Esmerling Vasquez (3-2) got the win with one strikeout in 1 1-3 innings of relief. Juan Gutierrez earned his second save.

James McDonald (4-4) took the loss, allowing two runs and two hits in one inning. He struck out one and walked two, including a bases-loaded walk with two out in the 10th.

Arizona took a 2-0 lead with two outs in the second on Augie Ojeda's double over left fielder Manny Ramirez's head, scoring Miguel Montero and Chris Young, who had back-to-back singles.

The Dodgers got a run back in the bottom of the inning on Ronnie Belliard's homer off an 0-2 pitch from Doug Davis. Belliard started at second base in his Los Angeles debut a day after coming from Washington in a trade for minor league right-hander Luis Garcia.

Ramirez and Matt Kemp hit back-to-back homers in the sixth, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. Ramirez sent the first pitch from Davis just over the wall in right center. Kemp followed with his 22nd homer over the center field wall.

Justin Upton tied the game at 3, hitting his 23rd homer off a 3-2 pitch from Los Angeles reliever George Sherrill with one out in the eighth.

Los Angeles starter Randy Wolf allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, struck out seven and walked two.

Davis gave up three runs and five hits in six innings, struck out and walked two.

Russell Martin went 1 for 5 as the Dodgers' leadoff hitter in a lineup juggled by Torre to give Rafael Furcal, Orlando Hudson and James Loney a night off, although Loney and Furcal entered the game late.

NOTES: The Dodgers became the first major league team to reach the 3 million mark in attendance, with 3,004,726 through 66 home games. It's the 14th consecutive season they've reached that plateau. ... Stottlemyre said Garland's departure opens up a chance for right-hander Billy Buckner to join the starting rotation. Buckner was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday when RHP Chad Qualls went on 60-day DL with dislocated left kneecap. ... Wolf was left sitting on 99 wins. ... The Dodgers ended August with a 14-15 mark, their first losing record in any month this season. They haven't had a winning August since 2006.
