Smith hits 2 HRs for Rocks, Young 3 HRs for Dbacks

Sep 7, 2009 - 5:01 AM DENVER(AP) -- Chris Young won the home-run derby. Seth Smith and the Colorado Rockies won the game.

Young hit three home runs for the Diamondbacks, but Smith homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs as Colorado completed a three-game sweep with a 13-5 romp Sunday.

"I have mixed feelings," Young said. "I hit the ball well today, but we got blown out. I would have felt better if we had won."

There were eight home runs overall. Ian Stewart and Carlos Gonzalez homered and Yorvit Torrealba doubled twice, helping Colorado extend its NL wild-card lead to two games over San Francisco.

Smith tore up Arizona pitching over the weekend. He went 9 for 13 with three homers and nine RBIs in the series.

"I feel good at the plate, don't get me wrong, but I don't feel awesome," Smith said. "I don't feel as good as what's been happening out there. You get lucky once in a while and that's kind of what makes you hot. Right now I'm just going to ride it out."

Young, who came into the game with only seven home runs this season, connected for a career-high three shots. He came up in the ninth inning with a chance to tie the major league record for homers in a game, and walked with two outs.

Young hit leadoff homers in the second, sixth and eighth innings. He got a cheer from the crowd of 35,192 at Coors Field as he rounded the bases after his last home run. It was the seventh multihomer game of his career and his first since hitting two in Colorado on April 5, 2008.

"Chris was a bright spot in a game where we didn't play very well," Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch said. "He really hit the ball well."

Young walked in the ninth off reliever Matt Herges.

"Herges said he wasn't going to let me hit a home run off him," he said. "I had one good pitch to hit."

Mark Reynolds hit his 41st home run in the ninth for the Diamondbacks.

Hinch replaced Justin Upton in the bottom of the third inning after the outfielder jogged to first base on a deep drive to left-center. The ball bounced off the wall and Upton was held to a single.

"I didn't run it out like I should have because I thought I had hit it out," Upton said. "It was hit pretty good."

Hinch said there wouldn't be any further disciplinary action.

"This was a case where the punishment fit the crime," he said. "He will be in the lineup" on Monday.

Jorge De La Rosa (14-9) won for the 12th time in his last 14 decisions and tied Jason Marquis for the team lead in victories. Although he only allowed one run on two hits, De La Rosa struggled through five innings while walking a season-high six and throwing two wild pitches.

"I didn't feel so good today," he said. "I battled the whole game."

De La Rosa didn't need to be sharp because Colorado's offense was dynamic from the start. Gonzalez led off with a four-pitch walk and Smith homered off Yusmeiro Petit (3-9).

After Petit retired the next two batters, Brad Hawpe drew a walk and Stewart hit the first pitch he saw into the Rockies bullpen to make it 4-0.

The Rockies padded their lead in the third. Troy Tulowitzki and Stewart walked and Torrealba drove them in with a two-out double.

Gonzalez hit his 11th homer in the fourth. Smith's three-run homer, his 15th, capped a six-run burst in the seventh.

"This guy has been nothing but a consistent offensive performance since the first at-bat he took this season," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "This guy is dangerous."

NOTES: Young is the eighth player in Arizona history to hit three home runs in a game. Damion Easley was the last one to do it, on June 3, 2006, against Atlanta. ... Torrealba extended his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest by a catcher in Rockies history. ... The Rockies and Diamondbacks combined to walk 19 batters, 10 by Arizona.
