Brewers-Marlins Preview
Jun 3, 2009 - 4:13 AM By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS WriterMilwaukee (30-21) at Florida (24-28), 7:10 p.m. EDT
Braden Looper was stellar in pitching with a heavy heart during his last outing. He'll now try to help the Milwaukee Brewers snap a five-game road losing streak to the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night.
Looper (5-3, 4.24 ERA) attended the funeral of his grandfather, 84-year-old LaVerne Looper of Granite, Okla., on Thursday. The right-hander regrouped the following day and yielded two runs and two hits in seven innings before Corey Hart hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to help him get the win in a 3-2 victory over Cincinnati.
"Essentially, he was my father, he was the guy who got me started in baseball. That home run by Corey was a gift," said Looper, who was given the game ball. "It's special. It's one of the games I'll remember for a long time."
Looper, who is tied with Yovani Gallardo for the team lead in wins, has won three of his last four starts.
He looks to give the Brewers (30-22) another strong performance as they try to bounce back from a 10-3 loss Tuesday to Florida (25-28) that followed a 7-4 defeat Monday in the opener of this four-game series.
Milwaukee has lost 12 of its last 14 games at Land Shark Stadium, and is 9-26 there since winning its first nine there from April 3, 1998-May 5, 1999.
Looper was a member of the Marlins from 1999-2003, helping them win the 2003 World Series as their closer. He's 4-0 with a 2.94 ERA in his last six games - five starts - against his former club. That includes victories in his last two starts at Miami, allowing four runs and 10 hits in 13 1-3 innings.
Florida, meanwhile, is looking for its first three-game winning streak since April 28-30.
The club hopes Dan Uggla can continue his home success against Milwaukee after getting two hits and three RBIs on Tuesday. One of his hits was a two-run shot that made him the fastest second baseman to reach 100 career homers, reaching the mark in his 502nd game - 34 faster than Alfonso Soriano.
"I knew I was going to reach the mark this year, and I knew it would be pretty cool when I did it, but now it's a relief to get it over with," said Uggla, who is hitting .212 with 10 homers and 38 RBIs. "The fastest as my position? That wasn't brought to my attention until (Monday). It's pretty special."
Uggla is 15 for 41 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 12 career home games against the Brewers. However, he's only 2 for 16 against Looper.
The Marlins will give the ball to rookie Sean West (0-0, 2.25), who will make his third career start and first against the Brewers.
The 22-year-old left-hander, a first-round pick in 2005, allowed one run and four hits in seven innings of a 2-1, 11-inning loss at New York on Friday. That performance came after an impressive major league debut May 23, yielding two runs and four hits in five innings while not getting a decision in a 10-3 loss to Tampa Bay.
"I was trying to maintain tempo in each inning," West told the Marlins' official Web site following his last outing. "I felt really good to get seven (Friday). We got in a groove there and had some quick innings. We had some fun."
