Phillies-Dodgers Preview

Jun 5, 2009 - 6:14 AM By ANTHONY GIORNALISTA STATS Senior Writer

Philadelphia (31-20) at Los Angeles (37-18), 10:10 p.m. EDT

Jamie Moyer's 250th win played a role in the Philadelphia Phillies producing their longest winning streak of the year. He also can serve as an ideal model for Eric Milton and his comeback bid with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Moyer takes the mound for the first time since his milestone win as the Phillies continue a four-game series with Milton and the Dodgers on Friday night.

Philadelphia (32-20) got a five-hitter from Cole Hamels on Thursday night in a 3-0 victory over Los Angeles (37-19), owner of the best record in the majors.

The NL East-leading Phillies didn't allow an earned run for the second straight contest and have a 2.71 ERA during a seven-game winning streak. They haven't won eight straight since May 2006.

After Hamels' stellar performance, two more lefties are set to take the mound in the second game of this series. It took Moyer (4-5, 6.75 ERA) about a decade in the majors to become a consistent winner, and Milton (2-0, 3.14) is hoping to follow a somewhat similar path.

The 46-year-old Moyer became the 44th pitcher to win 250 games Sunday, allowing one run and three hits in six innings as Philadelphia beat Washington 4-2. He's only the 11th left-hander to reach that mark.

"It's not about the personal things, I'm more excited about us winning," Moyer said. "When you play 20-some years, some of these things can happen."

It was one of only three starts in 10 this season in which he's allowed fewer than four earned runs.

Moyer struggled against the Dodgers on May 13, surrendering seven runs and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings of a 9-2 defeat. He's 3-7 with a 6.51 ERA in 12 starts against Los Angeles, including a loss in Game 3 of last season's NL championship series.

A veteran of seven teams, Moyer had a tough time over his first 10 seasons, going 72-79 with a 4.44 ERA. He pitched all of the 1992 season in Detroit's minor league system.

In 1996, however, Moyer went 13-3 with a 3.98 ERA and would win at least 13 games in eight of his next nine seasons with Seattle, including two 20-win efforts, and he totaled 30 victories in his first two full years with the Phillies from 2007-08.

Milton, meanwhile, was an All-Star for Minnesota in 2001 but has since been plagued by injuries. He hasn't finished a season with a winning record since 2004, when he went 14-6 for the Phillies.

Milton went 87-84 with a 5.01 ERA in his first 10 seasons, then missed 1 1/2 years while recovering from surgery on his left elbow before returning to the mound for the Dodgers on May 16. He's now earned consecutive wins after going nearly three years without one.

On Sunday night, Milton gave up two runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings of Los Angeles' 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

"It's all about command," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "He's putting the ball where he wants to."

Milton is 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA in four starts versus the Phillies, who may be without center fielder Shane Victorino for the second straight game.

Victorino missed his first game of the season because of a left hip strain. Jayson Werth replaced him in center field while infielder Eric Bruntlett took Werth's regular spot in right field.

Los Angeles' lineup has really missed suspended outfielder Manny Ramirez lately, managing just two runs against starting pitchers in its last four games.

"You definitely don't want it to develop into a trend, but nobody's panicking around here," Dodgers outfielder Juan Pierre said.
