Mets-Orioles Preview
Jun 17, 2009 - 4:30 AM By MATT BEARDMORE STATS WriterNew York (32-29) at Baltimore (27-36), 7:05 p.m. EDT
The New York Mets were the victim of a dropped popup just a few days ago. With the way they've been struggling, they'll gladly take being on the other end of a fielding error.
New York looks to win its second straight Wednesday night at Camden Yards where the slumping Baltimore Orioles look to regroup from an error-filled series opener.
The Mets (33-29), who had lost four of five, scored three unearned runs Tuesday as they took advantage of three errors to defeat Baltimore 6-4. New York scored four runs in the fourth when the Orioles committed two errors, then tacked on two more unearned runs in the seventh on a dropped popup by first baseman Aubrey Huff.
"I don't laugh at those," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said of Huff's over-the-shoulder attempt down the right-field line. "It's a nightmare and I wake up sweating. But it's a part of baseball. In the course of 162, everybody gets their breaks and all those things even out, for the most part."
The New York Yankees scored two runs in the ninth inning and won 9-8 on June 12 when Mets second baseman Luis Castillo dropped a two-out pop fly.
David Wright, who hit the ball Huff dropped, extended his hitting streak to 11 with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Wright is batting .558 (24 for 43) during this stretch.
Shortstop Alex Cora had a season-high three hits as the Mets won their first game at Camden Yards since a 7-6 victory in 10 innings on June 13, 2001.
Right-hander Tim Redding (0-2, 6.18 ERA) seeks his first victory in a Mets uniform as New York goes for its first back-to-back road wins since May 22-23 at Boston. Redding went 0-2 with a 9.20 ERA in his first three starts, leading Manuel to discuss the possibility of removing him from the rotation.
Redding, though, has a 2.77 ERA in his last two starts.
"It just feels good, period. It could have been against anybody," Redding told the Mets' official Web site after allowing one run through six innings in a 3-1 victory over the Nationals on June 5.
Redding struck out six and went a season-best seven innings Thursday as New York lost 6-3 in 10 innings to Philadelphia. Redding did not receive a decision in his only start against Baltimore, allowing four runs in four innings on June 3, 2003, with Houston.
The Orioles (27-37), losers of 11 of 15, will give the ball to Koji Uehara (2-4, 4.37), who makes his second start since coming off the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. The rookie right-hander was activated prior to Thursday's 6-3 loss to Seattle and gave up one hit in the first two innings before the Mariners tagged his first three pitches for hits following a rain delay.
"The guy hasn't pitched in two weeks and I think you could tell tonight," Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said following Uehara's five-inning outing. "There was some rust there so obviously he was affected by the long layoff."
Nick Markakis went 2 for 4 Tuesday, including a two-run homer in the sixth off Mike Pelfrey. He is batting .462 (6 for 13) in four career games against the Mets.
Brian Roberts, who had one of the Orioles' two errors in the fourth inning, went 0 for 5 to snap his six-game hitting streak. He is 2 for 3 with a double in his career versus Redding.
The Mets have won eight of 12 all-time at Camden Yards.
