Orioles-Marlins Preview

Baltimore (32-37) at Florida (35-36), 7:10 p.m. EDT

The Florida Marlins' streak of one-run victories continued Tuesday night, but it's unlikely they want to repeat the way they earned their latest win.

The Marlins will look to move above .500 for the first time since May 12 as they continue a three-game series with the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, Florida blew a three-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning as the Orioles recorded five straight singles. Jorge Cantu, though, helped the Marlins avoid an embarrassing defeat with a single in the 12th that allowed Emilio Bonifacio to score as catcher Gregg Zaun couldn't hold on to the ball during the attempted tag.

"We gave it up there in the ninth and kept the game tight all the way through that last inning," Cantu told the team's official Web site. "It went well overall."

The victory was the team's third straight one-run win and fourth in five games. Manager Fredi Gonzalez's club also improved to 8-5 against the AL in 2009.

"We've been playing good," shortstop Hanley Ramirez said. "We've have to just keep winning and try to win close games."

Ramirez's second career grand slam was part of a five-run seventh for Florida (36-36), and came two innings after Dan Uggla hit his third homer in five games to tie it at 1. The Orioles, who have hit .319 while winning seven of nine, responded with five runs in the eighth and ninth as Oscar Salazar drove home pinch runner Jeremy Guthrie for the tying score.

"We had a very good comeback and put ourselves in a situation where we could've won the game," Baltimore manager Dave Trembley told the team's official Web site. "It didn't happen, but to come back like we did, I think it says something about the resiliency of the club and the guys we have on the team."

While trying to continue their dominance at home over the Orioles, the Marlins will look to right-hander Ricky Nolasco (3-6, 7.15 ERA), who has shown a return to last season's form since being recalled from the minors.

Nolasco posted career bests for wins (15) and ERA (3.52) in 2008, but began this season 2-5 with a 9.07 ERA and was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on May 23. After going 1-1 with a 2.54 ERA there, the right-hander was recalled June 7.

Nolasco is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in the three starts since returning, and earned his first victory since May 8 by allowing one run and one hit Thursday in a rain-shortened five-inning 2-1 win in Boston.

He lost his only career start against the Orioles on June 21, 2006, at Camden Yards, allowing four runs and eight hits over seven innings of the 4-0 defeat.

Baltimore (32-38) will turn to rookie right-hander Jason Berken (1-3, 6.84) in its attempt to earn a rare win in Miami. The Orioles are 9-4 in interleague play this season, but have one win in 10 road games against the Marlins and are 5-14 all-time against them.

Since winning his major league debut May 26, Berken is 0-3 with a 7.59 ERA over his last four starts. He allowed four runs over 6 2-3 innings Thursday against the visiting New York Mets, but did not factor in the Orioles' 5-4 win.
