Padres-Diamondbacks Preview
Jul 6, 2009 - 4:49 AM By ALAN FERGUSON STATS WriterSan Diego (35-45) at Arizona (32-49), 9:40 p.m. EDT
By homering for the third time in four games, as well as venting frustration at his teammates, Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Mark Reynolds helped his club conclude its road trip on a positive note.
Reynolds and the Diamondbacks look to build on consecutive victories and snap their longest home losing streak of the season in a matchup with the San Diego Padres on Monday night.
Arizona opened its six-game trip with a win over Cincinnati but then dropped three straight. After a 5-0 loss to Colorado on Friday night, Reynolds accused teammates of "packing it in" and not playing hard while cameras rolled.
The Diamondbacks (33-49) responded the next night by rallying for an 11-7 win, with Reynolds hitting a solo homer.
He sparked another comeback Sunday with a three-run shot in the sixth inning of a 4-3 victory over the Rockies, who had won 21 of 26 coming into the series. Felipe Lopez added an RBI single in seventh to give All-Star pitcher Dan Haren the victory.
Reynolds was not picked for his first All-Star team despite 24 home runs, tying him for second in the NL with San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez, who was named an All-Star on Sunday along with teammate Heath Bell.
Going into a seven-game homestand, Reynolds is one of five NL players relying on fan Internet voting to earn the final spot on the squad.
"He's been a huge part of the team this year," said Haren, chosen along with teammate Justin Upton. "I really hope he gets in."
Reynolds will try to help Arizona snap its five-game skid at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks, with an NL-worst 15-28 record at home, haven't lost six straight there since a seven-game slide from June 5-11, 2006.
Jon Garland (4-8, 4.81 ERA) will try to stop the slide by ending his career-high six-game losing streak. Since his last win May 19, the right-hander has been plagued by inconsistency and gotten only 2.27 runs of support over eight starts.
Garland has given up at least four earned runs three times in that span, surrendering six over 6 2-3 innings of a 6-3 loss June 8 at San Diego.
He allowed one run in six innings Wednesday night at Cincinnati but suffered a 1-0 defeat. Garland, 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA in four starts against the Padres, beat them May 6 at San Diego by throwing seven scoreless innings in a 3-1 win.
The Padres (35-46) have dropped five of their last seven, falling 7-6 in 13 innings to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
San Diego rallied from a five-run deficit in the ninth and tied the game on Everth Cabrera's two-run single, but Edward Mujica gave up a solo homer to James Loney in the 13th.
"The team showed a ton of heart. That was awesome," manager Bud Black told the Padres' official Web site.
Outfielder Scott Hairston, who scored a run in the ninth, was traded after the game to Oakland for two minor league pitchers and a player to be named.
San Diego, which took two of three at Arizona from May 25-27, will try to help rookie Walter Silva (0-2, 8.86) earn his first major league victory. The right-hander, who has never faced the Diamondbacks, hasn't lasted more than 5 1-3 innings in five starts this season. He lost his last two outings.
The Padres lead the season series 5-4.
