Padres-Diamondbacks Preview

Jul 7, 2009 - 7:00 AM By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

San Diego (35-47) at Arizona (34-49), 9:40 p.m. EDT

After a difficult loss Friday night, Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Mark Reynolds lit into his teammates with a rant that was caught on camera.

Since then, his bat has done the talking.

Reynolds will try to keep making his case to join the NL All-Star team and help the Diamondbacks match their longest win streak of the season Tuesday night as they continue a three-game home series against the San Diego Padres.

Following a 5-0 defeat to Colorado on Friday night, Reynolds accused teammates of not caring and not playing hard while cameras rolled.

The infielder followed that outburst with home runs that helped rally his team to consecutive wins over the Rockies. He singled home the winning run in the ninth inning of Monday night's 6-5 comeback victory over San Diego, which snapped the Diamondbacks' season-high five-game skid at Chase Field.

"Three in a row feels good," manager A.J. Hinch said. "We've put together a decent momentum stretch. It wasn't always easy, but we found a way to hang in there."

Reynolds has hit .302 over his last 11 games with five homers and 13 RBIs. His 24 home runs are tied for second in the NL with Padres All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, and he is third in the league with 62 RBIs.

However, he'll have to wait until Thursday to see if he has enough votes to beat four other candidates for the NL's final spot.

Arizona (34-49), which last won four straight from May 20-23, will try to rely on its hot-hitting infielder and left-hander Doug Davis' success against the Padres.

Davis (3-8, 3.15 ERA) is 9-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 16 appearances versus San Diego, and his teams are 11-4 when he starts against the Padres.

He went six innings in an 8-0 win June 5 in San Diego but has gone winless in his last five starts as Arizona (34-49) has averaged 1.76 runs on his behalf. Davis, who has posted an 0.86 ERA over his last three starts, allowed one run over seven innings Thursday in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings at Cincinnati.

Losers in five of their last six, the Padres (35-47) will look for a better outing in Arizona from right-hander Kevin Correia (5-6, 4.58), who gave up a season-high six runs in a loss May 26 at Chase Field.

Correia also gave up six runs in Thursday night's 7-2 loss in Houston after going 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA over his previous five starts, a stretch that began with his only career win over the Diamondbacks on June 6 at home.

"It wasn't good. I didn't have the command," he told the Padres' official Web site. "I didn't have the same stuff I was throwing the last few starts."

Correia, 0-3 with a 4.94 ERA in nine career appearances in Arizona, will have to be careful against not only Reynolds but also Justin Upton.

The All-Star outfielder snapped an 0-for-18 slump to start this month with a two-run homer Monday and has batted .485 (16 for 33) in his last nine home games against the Padres.

Upton drove in three runs and scored the winning run after Chad Tracy's pinch-hit solo homer tied the game in the eighth.
