Lind drives in winning run as Jays beat O's in 10

Aug 8, 2009 - 9:57 PM TORONTO(AP) -- The Baltimore Orioles lost second baseman Brian Roberts when he injured his shin in the first inning. They lost the game in the 10th inning when Roberts' replacement, Ty Wigginton, couldn't make two important plays.

Adam Lind hit a one-out double in the 10th to drive home the winning run, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Orioles 3-2 on Saturday.

Joe Inglett started the winning rally with a single off Danys Baez (4-6), a ball that clanged off Wigginton's glove. After Inglett was forced out at second on a bunt by Marco Scutaro, Aaron Hill hit a soft liner up the middle that ticked off Wigginton's outstretched glove. Lind followed with a double off the wall in left.

"It was kind of a rough day out there for me," said Lind, who was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts before his hit and being mobbed by teammates at second base afterward. "I got a fastball over the plate. It feels pretty cool to have everyone run out there and jump on you and hit you on the head."

The victory snapped the Blue Jays' three-game losing streak while the Orioles lost for the 16th time in 22 games since the All-Star break.

Making just his sixth appearance of the year at second, the versatile Wigginton blamed himself for not coming up with either play.

"The first one hit off the heel of my glove," Wigginton said. "I should have made that play. The second ball got in the lights. I was actually surprised it hit my glove. It is what it is and it's unfortunate that we didn't find a way out of it."

Wigginton entered the game in the ninth as a pinch hitter for Robert Andino, who had replaced Roberts in the third, two innings after he fouled a ball off his leg. Roberts sustained a left shin contusion and had X-rays, which were negative.

"He took a direct hit right there," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "He was sore. He wanted to go but he couldn't do it."

Trembley wasn't concerned with defense when he put Wigginton in the game.

"You're playing on the road and, late in the game on the road, you're going to do what you can offensively to try to win the game right there," Trembley said. "Wigginton just missed one. It's a moot point, obviously, if Roberts is in the game."

Toronto put the winning run in scoring position in the ninth, but Baez got Edwin Encarnacion and Raul Chavez on fielder's choice grounders, sending the game to extra innings.

Nick Markakis doubled off the base of the left field wall on Brian Tallet's first pitch of the 10th but advanced no farther. Tallet left after striking out Aubrey Huff and Jason Frasor (6-2) got Nolan Reimold and Melvin Mora on groundouts.

Making just his third start, Orioles rookie Chris Tillman went a career-high 6 2-3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. The right-hander walked three and struck out four.

Things didn't start well for Tillman, who struggled with his velocity and said he felt "drained" after overexerting himself in the bullpen beforehand. After stretching in the dugout between innings, the righty felt his strength return.

"In the third inning, I definitely loosened up a ton," Tillman said. "Those first three innings, I felt pretty bad. After that I loosened up, got more confidence in my stuff."

Toronto took the lead in the second on a two-run homer by Alex Rios, his 14th of the season and second in two days. Baltimore tied it in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Huff and Reimold.

Toronto left-hander Brett Cecil had to make way for Tallet in the fifth after aggravating his left knee trying to field a bunt single by Andino. The rookie, who said the knee has bothered him since spring training, allowed two runs and five hits in 4 1-3 innings. He walked three and struck out two.

NOTES: Orioles LHP Rich Hill had season-ending shoulder surgery Friday, manager Dave Trembley said. He's expected to resume throwing by spring training. ... Trembley said RHP Brad Bergesen is still limping after being hit on the leg by a line drive July 30. He'll be evaluated Monday and, once the limp is gone, be cleared to start a throwing program.
