Marlins-Phillies Preview

Apr 16, 2010 - 4:21 AM By KATE HEDLIN STATS Writer

Florida (5-4) at Philadelphia (7-1), 7:05 p.m. EDT

Roy Halladay has made quite an impression in his first two National League starts. Now he looks to continue that momentum into his highly anticipated home debut with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Halladay makes his first start at Citizens Bank Park on Friday when the Phillies open a three-game series against the Florida Marlins, trying to stop Jorge Cantu's odd streak.

After 12 seasons with Toronto, which included winning the Cy Young Award in 2003, Halladay (2-0 0.56 ERA) was traded in December as part of a three-team, eight-player deal to Philadelphia (7-2). He's made road starts against Washington and Houston, giving up one earned run over 16 innings while striking out 17.

The right-hander pitched his first NL complete game Sunday against the Astros, allowing seven hits and striking out eight in the 2-1 victory. The run Houston scored was unearned.

"You just go until they tell you you're done," said Halladay, who pitched nine complete games in each of the last two seasons with the Blue Jays. "Obviously, if you go out for the ninth, you know you've got a chance to finish it."

Halladay has faced the Marlins (6-4) twice in his career, including last season when he left after three innings due to a sore groin. He is 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA over those outings.

Halladay will be looking to keep Cantu without a hit for the first time this season. He had an RBI double in a 10-2 win over the Reds on Thursday, extending his record of at least one hit and one RBI to 10 games.

Before Cantu's run, the previous major league record had been eight, set in 1921 by George Kelly of the New York Giants, and a year after RBIs became an official statistic.

"Hopefully I can continue to ride this, see where it takes me," said Cantu, who is hitting .308 with 15 RBIs. "I don't know when it's going to come to an end. But right now, I'm happy."

With the win, Florida split a four-game series against Cincinnati, and has scored at least five runs in the last six games.

The Phillies, meanwhile, will be trying to bounce back after having their five-game winning streak snapped in a 7-5 loss to Washington on Thursday. Danys Baez gave up homers to Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman in the eighth to put the Nationals ahead.

The Phillies' bullpen surrendered six runs in 3 2/3 innings after pitching 7 1/3 innings the night before in a 14-7 victory. Manager Charlie Manuel said he isn't concerned despite being without the injured Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero.

"We have the chance to have a good bullpen," Manuel told the Phillies' official Web site. "Just because we gave up some runs today and had trouble getting the ball over the plate, there are days you might see that."

Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 6.00) will take the mound for Florida in the opener after giving up five runs and seven hits in six innings of a 6-5 win over the Dodgers on Sunday. The right-hander won both of his starts against the Phillies last season, allowing one run and seven hits in 15 innings.

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has four homers in his last three games. None of his seven career hits against Sanchez have been homers.
