Padres hit 13 singles vs. Brewers in 9-0 win

Apr 30, 2010 - 6:19 AM By BERNIE WILSON AP Sports Writer

SAN DIEGO(AP) -- Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley going a combined 1 for 9 usually means trouble for the San Diego Padres.

Not Thursday night, when the Padres tied a team record with seven straight singles during a five-run fifth inning - including pitcher Wade LeBlanc's career-high third hit of the game - to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-0.

The NL West-leading Padres won their seventh straight home game and for the 11th time in 13 games overall.

San Diego's 13 hits were all singles. Every Padres regular except Gonzalez had a hit. Yorvit Torrealba had three RBIs and Jerry Hairston Jr. had two.

"We can't always wait for Chase and Gonzo to score," said Torrelba, who drove in the three runs with two hits. "It's amazing. It's really nice. Our goal is to score runs early because we know how good our pitching is. To be able to put some early runs out there, especially from the bottom of the lineup, even the pitcher, it's great."

After struggling early against Doug Davis (0-3), including taking four straight called third strikes, the Padres broke through with four runs on four hits in the fourth. The first four Padres reached base and scored.

San Diego got seven straight singles to open the fifth, starting with Headley's lone hit of the night. The second hit of the inning, by Scott Hairston, chased Davis. Kyle Blanks greeted reliever Jeff Suppan with an infield single that caromed off the pitcher's foot to drive in the inning's first run. Torrealba had a two-run hit and, after Jerry Hairston Jr. hit an RBI single, the streak ended when David Eckstein hit into a double play to bring in the inning's final run.

"We worked our way into that inning," manager Bud Black said. "We got Davis' pitch count up and that put some stress on him. Eventually, you break through."

The Padres had seven straight singles in the fourth inning at Cincinnati on July 24, 1995.

"They had seven straight hits and I don't think they hit anything hard other than the ball off Suppan," Davis said. "I don't even know how to describe that."

LeBlanc (2-0) struck out six, walked none and held Milwaukee to eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. He lowered his ERA from 0.82 to 0.52.

"Priority No. 1 is to give this team a chance to win, because these guys are going to do, so all I have to do is make sure I do my part," LeBlanc said. "Three hits is a bonus."

LeBlanc was stranded twice and forced once.

Davis went four-plus innings, allowing six runs, five earned, and eight hits. He struck out five and walked two.

"I've never had this before," he said. "I'm throwing the same amount of pitches I would be in seven innings. But I'm not hitting the barrel of the bat. I'm hitting the label but they're getting hits. I don't have an answer."

NOTES: Padres SS Everth Cabrera will go on the DL Friday with a strained right hamstring and will be replaced by Lance Zawadzki from Triple-A Portland. Zawadzki, coincidentally, had the first hit in Petco Park history when San Diego State beat Houston in 2004 in the first game at the downtown ballpark. ... Cabrera was hurt during the last homestand. ... Padres RHP Chris Young, on the DL with tightness in his right shoulder, threw a bullpen session and will make a rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Portland at Salt Lake City. ... LeBlanc picked off Carlos Gomez at second base for the second out of the first inning, his fifth pickoff this year. ... Coming in, Davis was 10-3 with a 2.91 ERA in 18 games against San Diego, including 17 starts.
