New York (26-16) at New York (20-23), 8:05 p.m. EDT
Having met on several occasions in AL Central matchups, CC Sabathia and Johan Santana are finally ready to meet on a different stage.
The ace left-handers will square off for the first time in the Subway Series in Sunday night's finale between the New York Yankees and New York Mets at Citi Field.
When Sabathia (4-2, 3.43 ERA) pitched for Cleveland and Santana (3-2, 3.72) for Minnesota, they faced each other four times. Sabathia went 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in those outings while Santana was 1-3 with a 4.68 ERA.
Of course, the lineups they faced were different than what they'll see in this series. Sabathia cruised in his first Subway Series outing, allowing one run and striking out eight over seven innings in a 9-1 victory at Citi Field last June 26.
The Yankees ace improved to 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in two career starts against the Mets, and he's 12-3 with a 3.54 ERA in his last 25 interleague outings.
Sabathia also relishes pitching in NL parks since he gets a chance to hit. He's a career .295 hitter with two homers and eight RBIs in 17 interleague games, and is batting .261 overall including his stint in the NL with Milwaukee in 2008.
"It's the first time I ever get to hit off him (Santana)," Sabathia told the Yankees' official website. "I'm excited for it. I don't know how excited I will be after the game tomorrow, but I'm excited now."
The Yankees have lost his last two starts. Sabathia gave up one run over seven innings Tuesday before the bullpen blew a five-run lead in a 7-6 home loss to Boston.
Santana has extensive experience against the Yankees, going 4-2 with a 4.59 ERA in eight regular-season starts. That includes a 1-2 mark with an 8.64 ERA in three outings with the Mets.
His last outing against the Yankees was forgettable. Santana gave up nine runs - then a career high - over three-plus innings in a 15-0 loss in the Bronx last June 14.
"It motivates me," he told the Mets' official website. "I don't go crazy about it, but it's there. I want to pitch against them again."
Santana has a 2.49 ERA with no decisions over his last three starts, giving up two runs over seven innings in Tuesday's 3-2 loss at Atlanta. He's 2-5 with a 5.11 ERA in seven career interleague starts with the Mets.
While Yankees sluggers Alex Rodriguez (5 for 23) and Mark Teixeira (6 for 26) have fared poorly against Santana, captain Derek Jeter is 11 for 26.
Jeter is 1 for 9 in this series after entering it as a career .386 hitter against the Mets. The shortstop's 304 interleague hits are the most in history.
The Mets won for the first time in five tries at Citi Field against the Yankees with a 5-3 victory Saturday to even this series. Jason Bay tied a career high with four hits and David Wright added a pair of RBI singles.
Teixeira went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, and is stuck in a 1-for-20 rut over his last five games. He's also 4 for 30 in his career in the Subway Series.
"I feel terrible," he said. "I won't get any worse than right now."
