Orioles-Yankees Preview

Jun 2, 2010 - 4:31 PM By ANTHONY GIORNALISTA STATS Senior Writer

Baltimore (15-37) at New York (32-20), 7:05 p.m. EDT

A little bit of luck helped New York win its last contest. If Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada are healthy, perhaps the Yankees won't need to rely so much on good fortune.

Two of the club's most productive hitters might be back in the lineup as the Yankees seek their fourth straight win in a matchup with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

Baltimore third baseman Miguel Tejada's two-out, two-run throwing error allowed New York (32-20) to win the opener of this three-game series 3-1 on Tuesday night. A second consecutive victory over the Orioles (15-37) would give the Yankees four straight wins for the first time since a six-game run from May 2-8.

New York, though, is coming off a subpar game at the plate, managing six hits after scoring 37 runs over its previous four contests.

Teixeira's absence may not have helped, as the two-time All-Star left after three innings because of a bruised left foot. The Yankees said X-rays were negative and he is day to day.

"I fully expect to be in there (Wednesday)," said the veteran first baseman, batting .303 (10 for 33) over his last nine games.

If Teixeira sits out, Juan Miranda would likely start in his place after taking over for him Tuesday.

Francisco Cervelli has done an admirable job of filling in for Posada, who has been out the past two weeks due to a hairline fracture in his right foot. Posada ran the bases Tuesday without pain and hopes to be activated from the disabled list Wednesday.

"We feel pretty comfortable that he may not have any rehab (assignments)," manager Joe Girardi told the Yankees' official website. "We'll just bring him out there."

Posada was one of New York's hottest hitters before getting hurt, batting .326 with six homers, eight doubles and 14 RBIs in 26 games. Girardi may decide to ease Posada back by using him as the designated hitter, meaning Cervelli would catch Phil Hughes (6-1, 2.70 ERA) on Wednesday.

Hughes won his last start, giving up two runs while striking out eight in seven innings of an 8-2 victory over Cleveland on Friday night. The right-hander went 0-1 with a 7.59 ERA in his previous two games.

Hughes is 2-2 with a 6.67 ERA in six starts versus the Orioles, but had a strong outing against them April 27. He gave up one run and two hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 5-4 Yankees loss.

Baltimore will give the ball to Brad Bergesen (3-3, 5.96), who has a 7.50 ERA over his last two starts. The right-hander yielded four runs in seven innings as Baltimore lost 7-5 to Oakland on Thursday night.

In his only start against the Yankees, Bergesen surrendered four runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 9-1 loss May 19, 2009.

Orioles pitchers have been getting almost no run support over the past week. Baltimore has scored two runs or fewer five times during a six-game skid.

First baseman Ty Wigginton leads the Orioles with 13 homers, but has one over his last 15 contests and has batted .214 during that span. Wigginton is hitting .215 in 30 road games versus the Yankees.
