Dodgers-Reds Preview
Jun 16, 2010 - 6:36 AM By MATT BEARDMORE STATS WriterLos Angeles (37-27) at Cincinnati (36-29), 7:10 p.m. EDT
A lengthy homestand couldn't have ended much worse for the Los Angeles Dodgers. An impressive victory to open their road trip may have gotten them back on track.
Los Angeles looks to continue its strong play on the road when it tries to win its series against the struggling Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night.
The Dodgers (37-27) won eight of their first 10 on a season-high 13-game homestand, but were swept in three games by the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend. The Dodgers scored eight runs in the series.
They bounced back offensively Monday, pounding out a season high-tying 19 hits in a 12-0 win over the Reds. Rafael Furcal drove in two runs and matched a career high with five hits, James Loney had four hits and two RBIs and Manny Ramirez went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs.
Furcal was the star of the game," said manager Joe Torre, whose team has won 10 of 13 on the road. "He did everything but sell tickets."
Los Angeles is averaging 10.0 runs while hitting .373 with six homers in four games at Great American Ball Park this season.
The Reds (36-29) have not been nearly as proficient at the plate recently, striking out 12 times in each of their last two games and totaling three runs. Tuesday's shutout was Cincinnati's most lopsided loss since a 13-0 defeat to St. Louis on Oct. 1.
"They blew us out," manager Dusty Baker said after his team fell into a first-place tie with the Cardinals in the NL Central. "They got hit after hit after hit. That was not a good night for us tonight - a long game and a drubbing to boot."
The Reds will look to rebound against Clayton Kershaw (6-3, 3.13 ERA). The left-hander is coming off a season-high 10-strikeout effort in a 4-3 victory over St. Louis on Wednesday.
Kershaw, who leads the NL with 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings, struck out six of his first 10 batters before allowing a three-run shot to Ryan Ludwick. It was the first homer against him in 43 innings.
Kershaw, 5-1 with a 1.91 ERA in his last seven outings, makes his second start versus the Reds. He struck out 11 and threw seven innings of four-hit ball in a 3-2, 12-inning win at Cincinnati on Aug. 30.
The Reds counter with rookie right-hander Mike Leake (5-0, 2.68), who earned his first career victory April 22 against the Dodgers. Making his third career start, Leake yielded five runs in seven innings of an 8-5 win.
"Not a lot gets to me," he said. "I'm excited. I just don't show it too much."
Leake has shown plenty since that start, going 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA in nine outings. He nearly suffered his first loss Thursday before the Reds rallied for three eighth-inning runs to defeat San Francisco 7-6.
"You can't give up on us," Leake said after allowing season highs of five runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings. "We're a pretty good team."
Cincinnati will try to avoid losing three straight for the first time since a season-high five-game slide April 14-18.
