Indians-Phillies Preview

Jun 22, 2010 - 4:44 AM By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Cleveland (26-42) at Philadelphia (35-32), 7:05 p.m. EDT

Jimmy Rollins is set to return for Philadelphia. A three-game series with the last-place Cleveland Indians could also be timely for a Phillies team struggling to keep pace in the NL East.

The Phillies could have Rollins in the lineup for the first time in a month as they look to get back on track Tuesday night against the Indians.

A right calf strain has landed Rollins on the disabled list twice, limiting the shortstop to 12 games and none since re-aggravating the injury May 21.

The Phillies could have the three-time All-Star and 2007 NL MVP available Tuesday, and the club is eager for his return.

"Jimmy helps bring that extra bit of swagger back to the team," first baseman Ryan Howard told the Phillies' official website. "He believes in what our team can do and what we're capable of doing. We just go out and do our best to back him up. But he definitely brings that leadership role back. It'll be good to have him back."

Philadelphia (35-32) has dropped 17 of 26 while hitting .226 and averaging 3.2 runs during Rollins' second stint on the DL. The club lost its second straight Sunday, 4-1 to Minnesota.

Rollins, batting .341 with two homers and seven RBIs, could provide an offensive spark after the Phillies managed four hits Sunday. They scored 32 runs in the previous four games.

The defending NL champions are having trouble keeping up in the division. They are in third place, three games back of second-place New York and a season-high 5 1/2 behind Atlanta.

Philadelphia will send Jamie Moyer (7-6, 4.76 ERA) to the mound as the veteran looks to build on an excellent performance in his last outing. The left-hander allowed two runs and three hits in eight innings of a 6-3 road victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Moyer has gone 7-0 with a 2.33 ERA in his last 11 starts against the Indians.

Cleveland (26-42) is at the bottom of the AL Central and has lost six of seven, falling 5-3 at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The Indians will give the ball to Mitch Talbot (7-5, 4.21), who is coming off his worst game of the season in an 8-4 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. The right-hander gave up career highs of eight runs and 13 hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Talbot attributed his struggles to miscommunication with rookie catcher Carlos Santana, as the players formed a battery for the first time.

"There were a couple of sign mishaps," Talbot told the team's official website. "It hurt us a couple times, because we weren't on the same page, but we got it taken care of."

Some familiarity with Santana, and a start away from Cleveland, could be what Talbot needs to rebound. He has won four of his last five road outings with a 1.87 ERA.

The Indians and Phillies have split six all-time meetings, all of them in Cleveland. The Indians took the most recent series, winning two of three from June 18-20, 2007.
