Yankees-Athletics Preview

New York (50-31) at Oakland (41-42), 10:05 p.m. EDT

CC Sabathia has won six straight starts, but extending that streak may not be easy since he's pitching in a difficult venue for him against a starter who is also on a roll.

The New York Yankees ace looks to notch a rare victory near his hometown at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Tuesday night when he faces fellow All-Star Trevor Cahill, who is unbeaten at home for the Athletics.

Sabathia (10-3, 3.33 ERA) has posted a 2.00 ERA in winning every start since the beginning of June and can equal his career-best streak of winning seven straight outings Aug. 5-Sept. 7, 2005, with Cleveland. It probably won't be easy for the native of Vallejo, about 30 miles north of Oakland.

In 10 starts at the Coliseum, the left-hander is 2-5 with a 5.95 ERA - his highest mark in any current AL ballpark. That includes a four-hitter in a 4-2 loss to the Athletics (41-43) on April 22.

After that defeat, the veteran admitted he used to press pitching in front of friends and family, but he believes that's in the past.

"I've been in the American League for 10 years," he told the Yankees' official website. "It's just one of those things that was a bad day."

Sabathia has pitched eight innings in each of his last three outings, yielding two runs in a 4-2 home win over Seattle on Thursday.

He'll be facing a tough opponent in Cahill (8-2, 2.74), who is 7-0 with a 2.12 ERA over his last nine outings. The right-hander, who has never faced New York (51-31), is 4-0 with a 1.35 ERA in five home starts.

"He's just thrown quality start after quality start," manager Bob Geren said. "He's real good. He's commanding both sides of the plate with his fastball, which is really opening up his changeup. He's really using all of his pitches effectively. He has all the tools."

Cahill, who gave up one run over seven innings in an 8-1 victory at Baltimore on Thursday, was ecstatic to be selected by Yankees manager Joe Girardi to represent the A's for the All-Star game in Anaheim near his hometown of Oceanside, Calif.

"At the beginning of the year, I never even dreamed I'd be in this situation right now," Cahill told the Athletics' official website.

The Yankees have won three straight after opening this series with a 3-1 victory Monday. Javier Vazquez went seven innings as part of a three-hitter, with Mariano Rivera bouncing back from a blown save Sunday with a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

Mark Teixeira homered and Curtis Granderson tripled in a run as New York improved to 3-1 against Oakland. The Yankees are trying to capture a series at the Coliseum for the fourth straight time.

"Trust me, I'm happy with the way we're playing and how hard our guys are playing, but I still think we can get better," Girardi said.

The A's have scored nine runs and are batting .158 against the Yankees.

Oakland's Kevin Kouzmanoff snapped his career-worst 0-for-30 skid with an infield hit Monday. The third baseman has a team-high 39 RBIs but none over his last eight games.
