Brewers-Reds Preview

Aug 31, 2010 - 4:44 AM By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Milwaukee (62-68) at Cincinnati (75-55), 7:10 p.m. EDT

Yovani Gallardo has endured a rough time on and off the field of late.

Things on the field might not get easier for the right-hander as he tries to help the Milwaukee Brewers avoid a fourth straight loss to the NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Gallardo (11-6, 3.50 ERA) has posted an 11.17 ERA in his last two starts. He pitched 6 1-3 innings and struck out 10 against Los Angeles on Thursday, but gave up six runs in a 7-1 loss.

Hours after that defeat, Gallardo and a clubhouse attendant were robbed at gunpoint in a supermarket parking lot.

"It was a scary moment for me," Gallardo said.

He allowed six runs and 10 hits in 2 2-3 innings of a 12-4 loss to Cincinnati on July 27. Gallardo has gone 2-2 with a 4.42 ERA in seven starts against the Reds.

Cincinnati (76-55) increased its division lead to six games over St. Louis with a 5-4, 10-inning win over Milwaukee on Monday. Cincinnati, 5-1 against the Brewers, has won 12 of 16 since being swept by the Cardinals earlier this month.

Though the division lead is the biggest for the Reds since they last reached the postseason in 1995, this current club is not taking anything for granted.

"You know (Cardinals) aren't worried about six games," said outfielder Jay Bruce, who singled home the winning run and homered for the fifth time in four games Monday. "It's going to be a battle until the end. That's what we expect."

Joey Votto had an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to nine games. He has batted .356 with 21 RBIs in his last 19 contests and is 13 for 26 with seven RBIs against the Brewers this season.

The Reds' Aaron Harang (6-7, 5.02) will come off the disabled list to make his first start in two months Tuesday. The right-hander posted a 3.26 ERA in his last three starts before being sidelined with back spasms at the end of June.

Despite giving up 11 earned runs and 14 hits in 11 innings over two rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville, Harang feels ready to return.

"I was down there to build up my endurance," he told the Reds' official website. "I wasn't worrying about the outcome. I wanted to get my feel back, getting the repetition and timing. I haven't had any (back) issues."

Harang has gone 5-5 with a 4.51 ERA in 18 starts versus Milwaukee (62-69) but lost his last two - both in 2009 - with an 8.74 ERA.

Prince Fielder is batting .333 with three homers against Harang. The Milwaukee slugger doubled Monday but is 4 for 19 versus Cincinnati this season.

Milwaukee's Casey McGehee had a run-scoring double for his major league-leading 28th RBI in August. The third baseman is 9 for 22 against the Reds in 2010.

The Brewers could be the first team to face left-hander Aroldis Chapman, who is expected to be called up from the minors and used out of the bullpen. The 22-year-old Cuban defector signed a six-year, $30.25 million deal with Cincinnati in January.
