Final
Indians-Royals Preview
Sep 19, 2010 - 6:59 AM By KATE HEDLIN STATS WriterCleveland (61-86) at Kansas City (60-86), 2:10 p.m. EDT
The only thing that might slow Shin-Soo Choo and the Cleveland Indians against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday is fatigue.
Less than 13 hours after their last game was completed, Choo and the Indians will look to complete a three-game sweep of the Royals.
Kansas City (60-87) and Cleveland (62-86) endured four rain delays Saturday night before the Indians prevailed 6-4. The game was held up for 36 minutes at the start and stopped in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
There were 3 hours, 40 minutes worth of rain delays, and the game didn't end until 12:47 a.m local time.
Most of the action happened before the final delay. Choo had an RBI single and Matt LaPorta hit a grand slam to cap the five-run fourth. The Royals, who lost 11-4 Friday, scored four runs in the fifth, but were unable to tie it despite three hits, including a home run, from Mike Aviles.
"It was just a miserable night with all the delays," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "We start to get a little momentum with the four runs and then it rains and you go back out and try to get something going and then it rains. It was just a miserable night."
Choo, who was 2 for 3 with an intentional walk in the ninth, is hitting .327 against the Royals this season, including 13 for 35 in eight games at Kauffman Stadium. He hit three home runs and drove in seven Friday.
The right fielder will try to improve those numbers against Luke Hochevar (5-5, 4.81 ERA), who goes for his first win in six starts. Choo is 6 for 11 with two doubles and two home runs against the right-hander.
Hochevar has made two starts after missing three months with a sprained right elbow, and gave up two unearned runs in five innings of a 3-1 loss to Oakland on Monday.
"I didn't feel like my command was sharp," he said. "I'm past the elbow issue. Now it's about executing pitches and getting batters out."
The right-hander pitched a four-hitter against Cleveland on May 20, striking out seven in the 9-3 win. He's 2-4 with a 6.98 ERA in six career starts versus the Indians.
Cleveland, which has won three straight, is in position for its first sweep at Kauffman Stadium since April 22-24, 2008. They'll hand the ball to Josh Tomlin (4-3, 4.17), who looks to win his fourth straight decision.
Tomlin gave up three runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. He's allowed three runs in each of his last four starts.
The rookie right-hander gave up three runs and eight hits while walking four in five innings of a 15-4 win over Kansas City on Aug. 27.
