Mets, Marlins play rubber match at Sun Life Stadium

Apr 3, 2011 - 2:53 PM (Sports Network) - The Mets snapped a seven-game skid at Sun Life Stadium last night, and today they look to 36-year-old knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to hopefully win the rubber match of the season-opening three-game series with the Florida Marlins.

Dickey is coming off a season that saw him post the most wins over a single season. His 11-9 record and 2.84 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) showed promise that he could be a staple in New York's starting rotation.

However, facing the Marlins has been a struggle as evidence by a 2-2 record and 6.92 ERA in six games.

The Marlins will send Javier Vazquez to the mound today as the right-hander begins his first season in a Mets uniform. It'll be a small change of address for the 34-year-old, who went 10-10 with a 5.32 ERA in 31 starts (26 games) for the Yankees last year.

Signed to a one-year, $7 million in the offseason, Vazquez has a 10-9 mark with a 3.16 ERA in 25 career games against the Mets. Most of those starts came early in his career when he pitched for the Montreal Expos. Now he'll being 2011 pitching for his sixth major league team.

On Saturday, Willie Harris hit a two-run double to finish off a three-run 10th inning, and the Mets held on for a 6-4 victory.

David Wright had an RBI single in the 10th for the Mets. The Marlins came back to get a run in the ninth on Brett Hayes' two-out single, but Blaine Boyer got Scott Cousins on a ground out to earn the save.

Six of the game's 10 runs were scored after the eighth inning, with both teams getting one in the ninth.

"A win's a win," said Wright, "but at the same time I think the way we won is important."

If you include the three Marlins "home games" in Puerto Rico in 2010, the Mets are 2-9 on the road against the Fish since 2010.
