Still-winless Red Sox resume series with Indians

Apr 6, 2011 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox need Daisuke Matsuzaka to be their stopper this evening, when the team takes another crack at its first win of the season in the middle test of a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.

Following the offseason acquisitions of Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez, expectations were through the roof for a Red Sox team that missed the postseason last year. However, things haven't gone as planned, as Boston has lost its first four games

After getting manhandled in a season-opening sweep by the Texas Rangers, the Red Sox lost the series opener to the Indians on Tuesday, as Josh Tomlin worked seven strong innings to lead Cleveland to a 3-1 win.

Tomlin (1-0) allowed just three hits and one run while fanning three for the Indians, who got an RBI each from Orlando Cabrera, Jack Hannahan and Carlos Santana.

"Tomlin was just fantastic," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He kept those lefties off-balance the whole night with his four-pitch repertoire -- good changeup, overhand curve and he spotted his cutter very well."

Jarrod Saltalamacchia produced the lone run for the Red Sox, who dropped to 0-4 for the first time since losing the first five to begin 1996.

Josh Beckett (0-1) was tagged in the loss for five hits and three runs while walking four and fanning four in five innings.

Now the Sox turn to Matsuzaka. After winning 33 games through his first two years in the majors, the Japanese right-hander has struggled in two injury- plagued seasons since. Last year he went just 9-6 with a 4.69 ERA in 25 starts.

More importantly, though, Matsuzaka was a staff-best 5-1 when pitching after a Red Sox loss.

Matsuzaka also has had tremendous success when facing the Indians, as he is 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA against them.

Getting the call for the Indians tonight will be right-hander Mitch Talbot, who made 28 starts as a rookie a year ago. Talbot went 10-13 and pitched to a 4.41 ERA for the Tribe.

Talbot, struggled this spring, however, surrendering 22 earned runs in 23 innings of work.

Cleveland split its eight games with the Red Sox last season.
