White Sox go for another win in the Bronx

Apr 26, 2011 - 3:01 PM (Sports Network) - Though Chicago's bats didn't get on track last night, an outstanding pitching effort helped the White Sox pick up a much-needed win over the New York Yankees.

With runs still hard to come by, the White Sox hope that Gavin Floyd can put together a second solid start in a row this evening in the continuation of a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.

Despite getting held to three runs or less for the 10th time in 11 games, Chicago managed to halt a three-game slide and improve to 2-6 on an 11-game road trip with a 2-0 victory in this series opener on Monday. Phil Humber keyed the victory with seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball that included 6 1/3 no-hit frames.

The White Sox were coming off back-to-back shutout losses and only managed five hits in the victory. Adam Dunn, who came into the game with just two hits in his previous 30 at-bats (.067), went 1-for-2 and drove in a run with a groundout in the fourth inning.

A lack of offense will put pressure tonight on Floyd, who beat the Rays on Thursday after giving up two runs on seven hits over six innings with seven strikeouts. It was a nice rebound effort for the right-hander after giving up six runs over six innings in a loss to the Angels five days earlier.

"I felt like I had to dig deep, especially when guys were on," Floyd said. "Just try to make pitches, get ahead, and make them put it in play."

Floyd is 2-1 with a 4.00 earned run average in four starts this year and 1-1 with a 4.45 ERA lifetime versus the Yankees in five games (four starts). He has held some of New York's big hitters in check, with Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano combining to go 3-for-27 (.111) off him. Cano is 1- for-13 against Floyd.

Curtis Granderson has had a bit more success, going 8-for-29 (.276) with a homer and two RBI off the 28-year-old. The Yankee outfielder also carries a nine-game hitting streak into this contest after having one of New York's three hits last night. Granderson is batting .417 (15-for-36) over his tear with five homers and nine RBI.

A.J. Burnett gave up just a run in eight innings of work, but suffered his first loss in four decisions this year after New York was shut out for the second time this season. The Yankees had a season-best three-game win streak end and fell to 7-1 when holding teams to three runs or less.

"[Burnett] pitched great today. For us to not give him any support is tough," Granderson said.

It was also a rare setback by New York to Chicago. The White Sox are now 2-5 in seven games since the new Yankee Stadium opened prior to 2009 and have still lost eight of the past 11 meetings overall.

Yankees hurler Ivan Nova will make his first start this evening since April 15, when he gave up five runs on four hits and five walks over 4 1/3 innings of a loss to the Rangers.

Rain outs and off days have made it tough for manager Joe Girardi to keep his rotation in line, though he was able to get Nova a relief appearance last Tuesday. However, the 24-year-old righty did give up a run and two hits in just two-thirds of an inning and is 1-2 with a 7.63 ERA this season.

Nova has faced the White Sox once before, besting them on Aug. 29 after being charged with a run over 5 2/3 innings and striking out seven.
