Tigers send Scherzer to hill vs. Yankees

May 4, 2011 - 2:54 PM (Sports Network) - Max Scherzer tries to remain unbeaten this evening when the Detroit Tigers continue their four-game series against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.

However, Scherzer, who is 4-0 on the season with a 3.82 earned run average, is coming off a shaky outing in his last start on Friday in Cleveland, as the Indians reached him for five runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He also walked five batters and struck out seven and has fanned 37 batters in 37 2/3 innings this season.

"I had pretty good stuff," said Scherzer, who will try to become the first Detroit starter to go 5-0 to open the year since Jeremy Bonderman did so in 2007. "I was able to execute at times with all three pitches. That was the encouraging thing."

Scherzer beat the Yankees on April 3, despite giving up a season-high six runs and four homers in five innings. He has won both of his starts against the Yankees and has pitched to a 4.91 ERA in doing so.

The 32-year-old hurler should have some help tonight, as the Tigers welcome Victor Martinez back into the lineup. Martinez, who signed a four-year, $50 million deal with Detroit this past offseason, hasn't played since April 18 because of a strained right groin.

He was hitting .250 with a pair of home runs and nine RBI at the time of the injury.

The Tigers snapped a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday, as newly recalled Scott Sizemore made an instant impact, going 3-for-4 with an RBI to help Detroit to a 4-2 win.

"It's great to get the chance and you have to make the most of it," Sizemore said of getting the call to the majors. "I just want to go out and play hard every day and try to win some ball games."

Brad Penny (2-3) was solid, allowing six hits and one unearned run in six innings for the Tigers.

Mark Teixeira launched a solo home run and Jorge Posada had a pair of hits for the Yanks, who had won three in a row, including a 5-3 victory in Monday's series opener.

New York starting pitcher CC Sabathia (2-2) went seven innings in the loss, yielding four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts.

Hoping to get New York back into the win column tonight will be right-hander Freddy Garcia, who has owned the Tigers over the course of his career, posting an 18-7 mark in 31 starts against them.

Garcia suffered his first loss of the season on Friday against Toronto, as he allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings, dropping him to 1-1 to go along with a 2.00 ERA.

The Yankees took two of three from the Tigers earlier this year in the Bronx.
