Marlins earn series sweep as Sanchez shuts out Giants

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Anibal Sanchez struck out eight batters for his third career shutout, leading the Marlins to a 1-0 victory over the Giants to sweep a three-game series.

It added insult literally to injury for the Giants, who placed star catcher Buster Posey on the disabled list earlier Thursday with a fractured left leg and torn ligaments in his ankle.

Sanchez (4-1) gave up just five hits and two walks, working around Freddy Sanchez's one-out double in the ninth inning for his first shutout of the season. It was his fifth career complete game and second this year.

"He was kind of in that zone. He was able to get ahead with four different pitches," Marlins catcher John Buck said of Sanchez.

Logan Morrison hit an RBI single in the sixth inning for the Marlins, who have won five of their last six.

Ryan Vogelsong (3-1) was a hard-luck loser after pitching eight strong innings. He yielded eight hits and a walk and struck out three.

The Giants were swept on the heels of a five-game winning streak and scored just seven runs in the series.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Posey was in pain and "very down" about his injury, which he sustained when Scott Cousins knocked him over at the plate to score Florida's go-ahead run in the 12th inning Wednesday.

"I hate to say (he's) distraught, but ... he has taken this pretty hard," said Bochy.

"He knows it's pretty serious," Bochy continued. "With what's going on, he's doing as well as you can be."

Giants trainer Dave Groeschner revealed the extent of Posey's injury after the game and said the team is most worried about Posey's torn ligaments.

"That's our concern right now," he said. "The fracture's going to heal. We're still getting opinions, so we don't have all the information yet. But the fracture's going to be fine."

The injury cast a shadow over the game and the Giants didn't move a runner to third base until the ninth, after Sanchez doubled and advanced on Aubrey Huff's ground out.

Until then, they hadn't had a runner on second base since doing it in each of the first three innings.

"It's frustrating. We got a well-pitched game," said Bochy. "We just needed somebody to come through and get a hit for us."

Vogelsong shut the Marlins down until the sixth, when Chris Coughlan hit a leadoff double, moved to third on Emilio Bonifacio's sacrifice bunt and scored on Morrison's single to center.

The sweep started a nine-game road trip for the Marlins, who are headed to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers this weekend...The Giants went 3-3 on a six-game homestand that started with a sweep of the Bay Area-rival Athletics and are headed out on the road for seven games starting with a weekend series in Milwaukee.
