With the scored tied at 2-2, the Padres plated three runs in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Eric Patterson led off with a walk to chase Minor from the game. Cody Gearrin was called in from the bullpen. Cory Luebke recorded the final out in the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth. Heath Bell picked up his 14th save of the year despite giving up an RBI single to Jones in the ninth.
The Padres got on the board in the third inning. Jason Bartlett worked a two- out walk and came around to score on Headley's double to left-center field for a 1-0 lead.
Atlanta scored twice in the fourth to go in front. Brian McCann led off with a walk and moved to second on Eric Hinske's infield single. Freeman drove in both runners with a double to left-center field to give the Braves a 2-1 edge.
