Final
White Sox use longball to top Mariners
Jun 8, 2011 - 5:42 AMVideo
Philip Humber (5-3) allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings on five hits and three walks while fanning five, as the White Sox were victorious for the sixth time in eight games.
Felix Hernandez (6-5) pitched 6 2/3 innings in defeat, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks. He also struck out five in the Mariners' third loss in four contests.
"He probably didn't have his best night but we'll take it. Every now and again you need to catch a break and sometimes that is a guy like that maybe not having his best night. So we'll take it and run with it," Konerko said about Hernandez.
Konerko led off the second inning with a home run to give the White Sox an early lead.
Chicago added four more runs in the third inning on an Omar Vizquel triple to right that scored Brent Morel and Juan Pierre. Quentin followed with his 15th home run of the season to give Chicago a 5-0 advantage.
Seattle got on the board in the fourth after putting runners on the corners with one out. Adam Kennedy walked and advanced to third on a single by Franklin Gutierrez before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Olivo.
The Mariners left runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings, but each time Humber was able to work himself out of trouble. While Humber was on the mound, he held Seattle to 0-for-5 in those situations and left six men on base.
"It should be a gut-check for them tonight because this is not the way we play and it's not the way we are going to play," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said about his team's performance.
Chris Sale recorded the final out in the eighth and worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to finish out the game for Chicago.
