Mets shut down Braves in rain-soaked win

Jun 16, 2011 - 5:23 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Four Mets pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout and Angel Pagan added a two-run homer as New York downed the Atlanta Braves, 4-0, in the second of a three-game set.

Dillon Gee, bidding to win his eighth straight decision, allowed just one hit over four innings while striking out five, but his start was cut short by a 1:11 rain delay.

D.J. Carrasco worked two perfect innings in relief, while Bobby Parnell (1-1) allowed just one hit and struck out five over two frames, as the Mets won their second straight and evened their record at .500.

"It's almost unfortunate. He should have got the win," Carrasco said about Gee. "He went out there and was carving those guys up."

Over four innings, Tim Hudson (5-6) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and one walk while striking out four.

"I felt pretty good out there, even though we did have that delay to start the game," said Hudson. "I gave up three runs. It seemed like a lot to give up the way Gee was throwing on the other side. He's been controlling the ball pretty good as of late and it showed tonight."

Following a 1:22 weather delay, which included steady hail, Jose Reyes began the game with his 20th double of the season, then advanced to third on a Jason Heyward throwing error. The Mets grabbed the early lead as Ruben Tejada's groundout plated Reyes.

The Braves threatened but came up empty in the second, as Joe Mather struck out following a two-out double and a walk by Alex Gonzalez and Heyward, respectively.

Daniel Murphy worked a leadoff walk to start the fourth and trotted home on Pagan's towering home run, which barely stayed inside the right-field foul pole.

In the seventh, New York limbered following the game's second delay, loading the bases with no outs. Willie Harris followed with a grounder to first, but Eric Hinske was able to get the force at home. Reyes then ripped a Scott Linebrink offering towards first, where Hinske snagged the hopping seed with a spectacular diving stop and got the force at first, but his throw to second was late, as Lucas Duda crossed the plate, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth to seal the win.
