Gomes homers against former team, Reds blank Rays
Jun 28, 2011 - 2:15 AM St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Jonny Gomes homered against his former team and Mike Leake pitched six shutout innings in Cincinnati's 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Brandon Phillips went 4-for-5 and knocked in a pair for the Reds on the eve of his 30th birthday. Fred Lewis had two hits and scored once as Cincinnati bounced back from losing two of three at Baltimore over the weekend. The Reds moved to 7-0 all-time against the Rays.
Leake (7-4) limited the Rays to four hits and snapped a personal two-game skid. Sam LeCure allowed one hit over the ensuing two innings and Nick Masset finished up the shutout.
Jeremy Hellickson (7-7) had nine strikeouts over six innings, but lost his fourth consecutive start. The Rays have scored a total of one run in those games.
Ben Zobrist and Matt Joyce each doubled twice for the Rays, who had a four- game winning streak broken. They've lost just twice in their last 10 contests.
