Can't lose 'em all: Stanton's 10th-inning HR gets Fish past Phils

Jul 7, 2011 - 4:38 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Mike Stanton tattooed a Danys Baez curveball over the left-field wall in the 10th inning, giving the Marlins a 7-6 victory over the Phillies in the finale of a three-game series.

Stanton, who had been homerless since June 11th, slammed Baez's offering with a thunderous swing that sent the hanging breaking ball into the vacant seats in left, snapping Florida's seven-game losing streak to Philadelphia.

The home run salvaged the series and gave the Marlins just their second win in 17 games decided by one run. Edward Mujica (6-2), Florida's fifth arm out of the bullpen, threw a perfect 10th to earn the win.

Logan Morrison had a two-run homer, while Hanley Ramirez went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI for the victors.

"We needed this one. We needed a spark to get us back on track," Stanton said.

John Mayberry went deep twice for the Phillies, who failed to complete a sweep for the third straight series. Philadelphia's bullpen, anchored by Baez (2-4), gave up four runs in defeat.

"It slipped away from us," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "They capitalized on everything we did wrong."

The Phillies got a pair of two-out runs in both the second and third innings. In the former, Domonic Brown walked to keep the inning alive for Mayberry, who launched one barely over the wall in left for his fourth home run of the season. In the latter frame, Raul Ibanez doubled over the glove of center fielder Bryan Petersen to plate Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

The Marlins put together their own two-out rally in the third. With runners on first and second, Gaby Sanchez singled to right field and the ball got under Brown's glove, allowing both Anibal Sanchez and Emilio Bonifacio to score. Ramirez followed with a slow roller to short and beat out Jimmy Rollins' wide throw to first, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Rollins got one of the runs back in the fourth by taking a payoff pitch over the wall in right. In the sixth, Mayberry, recalled earlier in the week from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, put one into roughly the same spot he did earlier in the game for his first career multi-home run game.

David Herndon relieved Kyle Kendrick to start the home sixth and quickly made it a one-run game, as Ramirez singled prior to Morrison's 12th homer of the year.

Drew Carpenter gave up the tying run in the seventh when Ramirez's single to center plated Omar Infante, who tripled two batters earlier. Carpenter got out of a bases-loaded jam by getting Stanton to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play, keeping it a 6-6 game.

Mike Cameron, acquired in a trade with the Red Sox on Tuesday, had a chance to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth with a runner on third and one out. But Cameron fouled out in his first Marlins at-bat, and Michael Stutes, whose errant pickoff throw moved the runner to third, struck out Bonifacio to end the inning.

Game Notes

The Phillies still lead the season series, 9-3...Florida improved to 5-10 in extra-inning games this year, while the Phillies fell to 3-5...Neither starter pitched past the fifth. Kendrick allowed three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in five innings for Philadelphia, while his counterpart, Sanchez, was pulled after yielding five runs on six hits over four frames...Infante had three of the Marlins' 14 hits...Brown was called out on an appeal in the sixth inning when he missed second base legging out a would- be triple.
