Rasner, Yankees face Mariners

May 11, 2007 - 3:27 PM NY Yankees (16-17) at Seattle (15-15) 10:05 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Darrell Rasner looks for his second straight impressive performance Friday when the New York Yankees open a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

New York's rotation has been ravaged by injuries this season, including those to Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano, allowing several spot starters a shot at taking center stage.

But with Wang and Mussina now healthy - and Roger Clemens on his way - Rasner (1-1, 2.75 ERA) will need to earn his place in the rotation.

The fifth spot has yet to be solidified with Japanese import Kei Igawa demoted to the minors, and rookie Matt DeSalvo and top prospect Phil Hughes the other two candidates for the open spot.

Rasner did a stellar job as a replacement in his last outing, yielding just three hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a 5-0 win over the Mariners last Sunday.

After flirting with a perfect game in his last start, Wang struggled Thursday, allowing a career-high tying seven runs and 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings as New York suffered a 14-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

The Yankees lost for just the fourth time in their last 12 games. They also failed to climb above .500 for the first time since April 20.

The Mariners will counter with Jarrod Washburn (2-3, 3.18), who faced off with Rasner last Sunday. The lefthander allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in that contest.

He is 4-4 with a 2.80 ERA in nine career starts against the Yankees.
