Washburn shuts down potent Yankees' lineup as Mariners win
May 12, 2007 - 7:26 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jarrod Washburn found a way to shut down the league's top-scoring team and turn the tables.Washburn threw eight stellar innings and Kenji Johjima hit a two-run homer as the Seattle Mariners posted a 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday in the first game of their nine-game homestand.
The lefthander got revenge for the 5-0 loss the Yankees handed him Sunday by allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out six.
"The thing that was working the best for me was getting ahead with the fastball and working inside on their entire lineup," Washburn said. "(I) controlled the inner half of the plate and getting ahead that was basically the story."
Washburn (3-3) retired the last eight hitters he faced and finished off his night by striking out Hideki Matsui swinging in the eighth. As he walked off the mound, Washburn pumped his fist and let out a yell.
"When he's on you get a performance like tonight," Seattle skipper Mike Hargrove said. "I don't know that I've seen a better pitching performance than what he did tonight."
It was an outstanding effort against the Yankees, who lead the majors with 192 runs scored, but they could not come through with clutch hits early and lacked opportunities late.
"Jarrod was great tonight," New York manager Joe Torre said. "He didn't miss his spots very often, but we didn't have any good at-bats either. You certainly have to give him credit, but we're just going to have to start swinging the bats better."
New York had runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but Washburn did not allow them to get a runner to second thereafter.
Despite only scoring two runs in their last two games, Johnny Damon didn't seem too concerned about the New York offense.
You're always going to hit a lull, Damon said of his offense. We are leading the league in runs scored and we're going to continue to. Hopefully, when we do score those runs our pitchers can keep the other team at bay.
Damon led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a groundout by Bobby Abreu. Washburn then retired Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez on groundouts to end the inning.
The lefthander thwarted a threat in the second as well. With two on and one out Washburn struckout Robinson Cano on a looping curveball and Melky Cabrera on a fastball.
The Yankees threatend again the third, when Derek Jeter walked and Alex Rodriguez singled with two outs, but Washburn got Matsui to foul out to end the inning.
J.J. Putz pitched a scoreless ninth to remain a perfect 8-for-8 in save situations.
Johjima belted a 2-1 fastball from Darrell Rasner (1-2) into the left field seats for a two-run homer - his fourth of the year - that made the score 3-0.
Rasner, who is pitching for the last open spot in the Yankees' rotation, was let down by his offense. He allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings.
Rasner beat Washburn last Sunday in New York, and did not allow a run in 5 2/3 innings in that contest.
"(Rasner) pitched well. He made one mistake," said Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, who had two hits for New York. "Johjima's home run came over the middle of the plate. It should have been a 1-0 game towards the end, but it wasn't."
Ichiro Suzuki hit a double in the third inning that led to Seattle's first run, and stole two bases. Suzuki now has 44 consecutive stolen bases, which is six shy of the major-league record of 50 set by Vince Coleman from September 18, 1988 through July 26, 1989.
Raul Ibanez plated Suzuki with an one-out RBI single to put the Mariners up 1-0.
