Carp's HR boosts M's over Angels
Aug 30, 2011 - 5:55 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Mike Carp hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Mariners over the Angels, 5-3, in the opener of a four-game series.Dustin Ackley went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBI for the Mariners, who put the brakes on a three-game skid.
Tom Wilhelmsen (2-0) set down the Angels in order in the top of the eighth to earn the win and Brandon League worked around a Mark Trumbo double in the ninth to record his 32nd save of the season.
Trumbo belted a two-run homer for the Angels, who have dropped three of four after a six-game win streak. They fell to 3 1/2 games behind the AL West- leading Rangers.
Hisanori Takahashi (3-3) spelled starter Joel Pineiro and allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Pineiro gave up three runs over six full frames, while Mariners starter Blake Beavan lasted seven innings and also surrendered three runs.
"We need depth in that rotation and Pineiro gave us a change to win tonight," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "We just couldn't follow through on it."
Ackley's sac fly plated Ichiro Suzuki, who reached with a leadoff double in the first. An inning later, Kyle Seager's sac fly scored Miguel Olivio, who also reached with a leadoff double, as the Mariners took a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Trumbo followed a two-out Torii Hunter single with his 24th home run of the season. Vernon Wells then singled and scored on Erick Aybar's double into the gap in right-center, giving the Angels a 3-2 advantage.
Takahashi tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to temporarily preserve the lead, but Ackley doubled to begin the eighth and Carp belted the lefty reliever's first offering deep into the seats in right.
"(It was a) first pitch slider right over the plate," said Carp. "I just put a real good swing on it. I wanted to move the runner over, that was my job, and I did more than that, which is good."
The Angels brought the minimum to the plate in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Trumbo's double came with two outs in the ninth and League grounded out Vernon Wells to end the game.
Game Notes
The Angels have homered in 19 of their last 20 contests...Suzuki extended his hit streak to a season-high 12 games. Despite the sac fly, Seager went 0-for-3, as his career-high nine-game hit streak came to an end.
